49ers LEGENDS TO LEAD PRO BOWL TEAMS
With the Pro Bowl Games being played in the Bay Area as part of the buildup to Super Bowl LX, the NFL has taken steps to ensure the local franchise is represented correctly.
The Games bring top players together for an AFC vs. NFC flag football showdown, surrounded by a host of skills challenges, as revamped programming gives the league’s best athletes an opportunity to compete in front of their families, friends and select fans during the biggest week of the year. To keep order, the NFL has named San Francisco 49ers legends Jerry Rice and Steve Young as ‘head coaches’ of the two rosters ahead of the festivities.
The two team leaders need little introduction. Rice, a 2010 Hall of Fame inductee, holds regular season records in receptions (1,549), receiving yards (22,895), touchdown receptions (197), scrimmage yards (23,540) and total touchdowns (208). He also holds multiple playoff records, including receiving yards (2,245) and touchdown receptions (22), including an NFL-leading eight touchdown receptions in four Super Bowl appearances – three for the 49ers and one with the Raiders.
Young, meanwhile, was responsible for a good chunk of the passes Rice caught, with the two team-mates on the 49ers for three of the Super Bowl wins, the last of which was won by Young as the starter. The one-time USFL QB earned Super Bowl XXIX MVP honours with a Super Bowl-record six touchdown passes against the San Diego Chargers. He was also known for his dynamic running ability and finished his career with 4,239 rushing yards and 43 rushing touchdowns, both the second-most by a quarterback all-time at the time of his retirement. Young also coached varsity girls high school flag football at Menlo School in Northern California, where his daughters studied.
The televised Pro Bowl Games will air live from San Francisco’s Moscone Center South Building on Tuesday 3rd February.
