49ers return to kickstart Mexico game
The 49ers are heading south of the border in 2026, with the announcement that they will be one of the participants in the Mexico City game in the new season.
The 49ers, one of ten teams with marketing rights in Mexico, will be making their third trip to the country in the International Series. They played the Arizona Cardinals in 2005 (lost 31-14) and 2022 (won 38-10) in their previous visits.
“We are thrilled to return to Mexico and to play in front of one of the most passionate fan bases in the league,” said San Francisco 49ers CEO Al Guido, while NFL Director General Arturo Olive added “Returning to Estadio Banorte highlights our strong, ongoing commitment to Mexico. Few places generate the kind of energy we see here, and we look forward to being back in a country that plays such a meaningful role in the growth of our game.”
The 2026 International Series will be the biggest so far, with nine games planned in eight stadiums in seven countries across four continents. 2026 has games in London, Munich, Mexico, Madrid, Paris, Rio and a first ever regular season game down under, with the Melbourne Cricket Ground hosting Australia’s first International series game.
