Brandon Aiyuk has identified the Washington Commanders as his preferred destination should the San Francisco 49ers finally grant his request for release, adding another chapter to what is fast becoming one of the NFL’s most acrimonious contract disputes.

The wide receiver, who remains on the reserve/left squad list while continuing his rehabilitation from the serious knee injury that ended his 2024 season, returned to social media on Wednesday with his clearest statement yet about where he wants to continue his career.

“Tell them boys cut me today and I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow,” Aiyuk wrote.

Washington has not commented publicly on the remarks, nor indicated any interest while Aiyuk remains under contract with San Francisco, but the latest post is the latest escalation in a relationship that has steadily deteriorated since the former first-round pick signed a four-year, $120m extension on the eve of the 2024 season. Rather than ending what had been a lengthy impasse between the two parties, however, the deal ultimately became another source of conflict.

Aiyuk suffered a season-ending injury after just seven games in 2024, catching 25 passes before tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee. During his rehabilitation, the relationship with the club fractured completely, with 49ers GM John Lynch acknowledging earlier this offseason that he does not expect Aiyuk to play for the club again, despite the Niners so far resisting his request for an outright release.

The financial fallout has also been substantial, with the Associated Press confirming that, last summer, the 49ers voided approximately $27m in guaranteed money for the 2026 season after determining Aiyuk had failed to participate in mandatory meetings and other team activities. He subsequently left the team during the closing stages of the season and has not spoken directly with either Lynch or head coach Kyle Shanahan since, instead airing his grievances through a series of social media posts.

Among them, Aiyuk accused the organisation of being ‘stupid’ for paying him so much money, while also claiming the club was now attempting to avoid honouring the contract it negotiated. The dispute now enters a critical phase with training camp approaching. San Fran’s veterans are due to report on July 25th but, while Aiyuk remains on the reserve/left squad list, he does not count against either the club’s active roster or salary cap. That changes if he reports to camp, potentially forcing the 49ers to make a definitive decision regarding his future.

Despite signing the extension, Aiyuk now has no guaranteed money remaining on the deal. He is scheduled to receive an option bonus worth nearly $25m before the start of the season, but only if he reports. Should he continue his holdout, San Francisco faces little immediate financial pressure to resolve the situation.

Complicating matters further, however, is an unrelated legal issue, resulting from a Santa Clara County judge issued a misdemeanour arrest warrant charging Aiyuk with ‘exhibition of speed’ after investigators reviewed a video he posted to social media last December allegedly showing him driving at excessive speed near Levi’s Stadium. Aiyuk’s attorney has said he intends to resolve the matter through the court process.

For Washington, the public endorsement comes as the Commanders continue building around quarterback Jayden Daniels. After a breakout rookie campaign that saw Washington reach the NFC title game, an injury-hit 2025 marked a regression from the team, and signing Aiyuk would represent an obvious upgrade to Daniels’ receiving corps.

Until such time as the 49ers decide to cut ties, the 28-year-old, who has three years remaining on his current contract, remains in limbo.
