BLACK MONDAY HEATS UP COACHING CAROUSEL

Neil Dutton NFL

Black Monday came and went as the NFL regular season reached its conclusion, with four teams waving farewell to their head coach and joining the two that made changes midseason.

Here’s a quick look at the six teams looking for new leadership as they turn their attention towards 2026.

ALREADY LOOKING

Tennessee Titans

The Titans fired Brian Callahan after six games of the 2025 season, bringing to a close a 23-game run at the helm for the son of long-time offensive line coach Bill Callahan. The Titans went a dismal 4-19 under Callahan, including a 3-14 season in 2024 that earned them the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. This was spent on QB Cam Ward, but the rookie was unable to kickstart the Titans, who were 1-5 when they pulled the trigger on Callahan.

Titans GM Mike Borgonzi has ties to the Kansas City Chiefs, and this experience certainly looks like it influenced the choice of candidates to replace Callahan. The Titans are expected to interview Chiefs OC Matt Nagy and DC Steve Spagnuolo, both of whom have mixed records as head coaches in the past. Tennessee is also set to speak to former Dallas Cowboys boss Jason Garrett and recently-fired Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris.

New York Giants

The Giants have been under interim leadership since Week 10, when they decided to fire Brian Daboll 61 games into his reign. The Giants were 2-8 when Daboll was let go, following a 9-25 record over the previous two seasons, which had, in turn, been preceded by a surprising first season in charge, which saw the former Buffalo coordinator lead the Giants to a 9-7-1 record and a Wild Card berth. Daboll’s inability to future-proof Big Blue’s quarterback position was a major part of his downfall, although the roster that his GM put together for him was hardly an imposing one.

The Giants seem to be casting a wide net in their search for a new head coach. Interim boss Mike Kafka has been interviewed, with the team also set to interview former Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak and former Packers and Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. Their priority target, however, seems to be former Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, after the Super Bowl winner was let go by the team on Tuesday.

BLACK MONDAY MOVERS

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals fired Jonathan Gannon after three seasons with the team, during which the team went 15-36. The offense was a massive problem area under former Eagles DC Gannon, who was lumbered with quarterback Kyler Murray and never saw the former first overall pick truly elevate the play of those around him. But the defense, supposedly Gannon’s bailiwick, was never truly a strength either, ranking 25th, 21st and 27th in yards allowed during his tenure.

The Cardinals will be speaking with Nagy, Kubiak, Patriots’ passing game coordinator Thomas Brown, 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Vance Joseph, who served as Cardinals DC between 2019-22.

Atlanta Falcons

Back-to-back 8-9 campaigns were not enough to keep Raheem Morris in a job, as the Falcons fired the former Rams DC after just two seasons in the role. The Falcons finished the 2025 season on a four-game winning streak, a run that Arthur Blank refuses to be blinded by as he seeks a return to winning ways for his franchise, which has now posted nine straight losing seasons. The Falcons’ defense improved under Morris, going from 23rd to 19th in yards allowed in his two seasons, but, despite heavy investment at the quarterback spot, the offense fell from sixth in yards and 13th in points in 2024 to 14th and 24th. Morris was shown the door at the same time as GM Terry Fontenot.

Kevin Stefanski is on the Falcons’ list of candidates to replace Morris, along with Kubiak and Weaver.

Cleveland Browns

It was kind of inevitable at the end, but the Browns’ decision to move on from Kevin Stefanski at the culmination of a frustrating season will still cause the occasional raised eyebrow or two. Stefanski spent six seasons in charge of the Browns between 2020 and 2025, and his 101 regular-season games at the helm are the third most in franchise history. Stefanski’s Browns posted two 11-win seasons in his first four seasons in charge, earning Coach of the Year honours to go with playoff berths in both seasons. But they went 8-26 over the last two as the offense, without a clear answer at quarterback, failed to make much of an impact. Hampered by a massive trade for a quarterback that he probably didn’t want, Stefanski tried his best with, to put it kindly, middling talent through his stint, but a change will probably do him as much of a power of good as the team.

The Browns are considering in-house replacements for Stefanski, with interviews lined up with current DC Jim Schwartz and OC Tommy Rees. They are also hoping to speak with Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Seahawks defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr and Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Pete Carroll era in Las Vegas lasted a solitary season, as the Raiders opted to go one-and-done with a head coach for the second consecutive year. The Raiders went 3-14 and ‘earned’ the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, with their offense ranking dead last in yards and points, as the defense, while ranking 14th in yards allowed, gave up the 12th most points in the league. This almost certainly marks the end of the road for Carroll as a head coach, but it also leaves Mark Davis looking for his eighth head coach since assuming ownership in 2011.

The Raiders have interviews lined up with Kubiak, Joseph, Nagy and Broncos passing game coordinator Davis Webb. Raiders GM John Spytek is a former Broncos scout.

WAITED TO CUT TIES

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens waited an extra day following their Week 18 loss to Pittsburgh before deciding a change at the top was necessary and, on Tuesday, they duly brought an end to the John Harbaugh era that began in 2008. The Ravens went 8-9 in 2025 and missed out on a division title and a playoff berth after three consecutive 10-win seasons and six postseason appearances in the last seven years. Harbaugh, the winningest coach in Ravens history, ends his time with the team as the proud owner of a 180-113 regular season record, as well as a 13-11 postseason mark and a win in Super Bowl XLVII. Harbaugh’s relationship with star quarterback Lamar Jackson came under scrutiny in recent weeks, but reports suggest it was reluctance to entertain changes to his coaching staff, allied to the poor showing on the field in 2025, that ultimately cost Harbaugh his job and made him the most desirable candidate in the current cycle.

No interviews have been announced by the Ravens as yet, but the bookies’ favourite for the job is Jesse Minter, currently in Los Angeles. Minter was a defensive assistant with the Ravens between 2017 and 2020 and, over the last four seasons, has spent time calling the defense for Michigan and the Chargers, under Harbaugh’s brother, Jim.

Harbaugh, too, appears to be in no rush to pin down his next opportunity, insisting that he will not take any interviews until after the first round of playoff games this weekend. Canny suggestions maintain that this may be a ruse to see if any victims of Wild Card Weekend open up their own coaching search, with Green Bay, Philadelphia, Buffalo and San Francisco all rumoured to be considering a change should things not pan out as they hope this postseason.
