The Pittsburgh Steelers have rewarded one of the most reliable specialists in franchise history, agreeing a record-tying extension with veteran kicker Chris Boswell that places him alongside Dallas Cowboys star Brandon Aubrey as the highest-paid kicker in NFL history.

According to multiple reports, Boswell has signed a four-year, $28 million extension worth an average of $7 million per season, matching the landmark deal Aubrey agreed with Dallas earlier this offseason.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the agreement, which locks Boswell into Pittsburgh through the 2030 season. The broader structure of the contract, including the final year of his existing deal, reportedly brings the total package to five years and $31.12 million, with $14.7 million guaranteed.

The move reflects both Boswell’s consistency and the increasingly premium value placed on elite kicking talent across the NFL. Aubrey reset the market in April when the Cowboys handed him a four-year, $28 million extension featuring $20 million guaranteed after a sensational start to his NFL career.

While Aubrey’s rise has been explosive — the former professional footballer and USFL standout has already established himself as one of the league’s premier long-range weapons — Boswell’s résumé is built on more than a decade of sustained production in Pittsburgh.

The 35-year-old has spent his entire 11-year NFL career with the Steelers, converting 299 of 341 field goal attempts for an 87.7% success rate, the sixth-best mark in league history. He has also made 353 of 369 extra points and remains perfect in the postseason, converting all 19 playoff field goal attempts.

Boswell’s leg strength has increasingly become a defining part of his game. Since entering the league in 2015, only Matt Prater has converted more field goals from 50-plus yards, while no kicker has made more from that range since 2021.

His latest extension arrives after another strong campaign in 2025, during which he converted 27 of 32 field goals and 42 of 43 extra points. The season included a franchise-record 60-yard game-winner against the New York Jets in Week 1.

That followed an outstanding 2024 season in which Boswell earned first-team All-Pro honours and a Pro Bowl selection after leading the NFL in scoring with 158 points while setting a Steelers single-season record with 41 field goals.

The Steelers’ decision also underlines how dramatically the kicking market has evolved. For years, kickers remained relatively inexpensive roster pieces despite their outsized influence on close games. Aubrey’s emergence as a genuine long-distance scoring threat accelerated that shift, and Boswell’s extension now reinforces the idea that elite specialists are once again being treated as foundational assets rather than replaceable veterans.

In different ways, both Boswell and Aubrey have altered expectations at the position. Aubrey’s extraordinary range has produced multiple successful kicks from beyond 60 yards and forced opponents to defend territory near midfield differently, while Boswell has become the prototype for long-term reliability in difficult conditions, particularly at Acrisure Stadium.

For Pittsburgh, the extension secures one of the few constants in a franchise still navigating uncertainty elsewhere on the roster. While questions continue around the Steelers’ long-term quarterback plans, they at least know the player finishing drives remains among the very best in football.
