BROWN PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO MURDER CHARGE
The crazy post-NFL life of Antonio Brown shows absolutely no signs of stopping, with news that the former Steelers, Raiders and Buccaneers wide receiver has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder.
Brown was apprehended in Dubai, of all places, before being sent to Miami to await trial. According to the arrest warrant, following a celebrity boxing event in Miami in May, Brown grabbed a handgun from a member of security and fired two shots at a man, Zul-Qarnian Kwame Nantambu, with whom Brown had fought (not in the ring) earlier in the evening.
Now 37, and several seasons removed from a football career that promised — and contained — much, but eventually fizzled out due to his erratic behaviour, Brown will not be held in jail while awaiting trial, but has instead has been placed under house arrest and will be required to wear a GPS monitoring device, according to a report from NBC News.
Prosecutors had argued that 2021 Super Bowl winner Brown should be detained without bail, citing concerns over a potential flight risk after Brown allegedly fled the country following the issuance of an arrest warrant. During a court hearing, however, Brown’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, maintained that his client no longer poses a risk of fleeing.
“He had a passport; he no longer has a passport,” Eiglarsh said. “He’ll be living at his home, right near my office in Broward County, right near my home, and we’ll be working zealously on his case.”
A separate statement from the attorney, which appeared on Brown’s social media feeds, claims that his defence will be that he was protecting himself.
“The actions he was forced to take were solely in self-defence against the alleged victim’s violent behaviour,” Eiglarsh insisted. “[Brown] was attacked that night and acted within his legal right to protect himself from an individual who previously committed criminal acts against him.”
