BUCCANEERS TO OPEN 2025 SEASON WITH 1976 FLAVOUR
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, along with the Seattle Seahawks, celebrate a notable landmark this season, and will mark 50 years as an NFL franchise by resurrecting their very first uniforms.
The team has announced that the infamous ‘creamsicle’ uniforms they wore in their debut season will be brought out for the opening game of their 2025 campaign, against the New York Jets, this September — but will only be seen in action this season before being packed away again.
The Buccaneers have come a long way since joining the NFL as its 27th franchise in 1976, and have worn variations on the ‘creamsicle’ theme over the years, but the 50th anniversary has warranted going back, way back, to provide a fitting celebration of the club’s rise and achievements — including two Super Bowl triumphs that seemed very unlikely in those early days.
“The ’76 Jersey represents a piece of Buccaneers history and serves as a tribute to the generations of fans and players who shaped this franchise,” said Buccaneers COO Brian Ford. “As we launch into our 50th season, we’re proud to reintroduce the ’76 Jersey and the tradition it embodies. It is a reminder that every Buccaneers fan, from the originals to the newest generation, is part of an evolving story that started in 1976 and continues being written today.”
The Buccaneers wore their original white jerseys for just one season, notable for having orange numbers with red outlines and the single orange sleeve stripe sandwiched between two red ones. Aside from the addition of the obligatory 50th anniversary patch, the uniforms will be recreated down to the last stitch and sticker, completed by white helmets featuring ‘Bucco Bruce’ logos, as well as white pants and striped socks. There will also be a nod to the team’s first fight song, which debuted along with the team’s first playoff appearance in1979, with the words Hey! Hey! Tampa Bay! included in the design.
