CARDINALS HOPE TO BLOOM UNDER LAFLEUR
The Arizona Cardinals turned to their own NFC West division for their next leader, announcing Sunday that they have hired Mike LaFleur as head coach on a five-year contract to replace Jonathan Gannon.
The move comes after a season in which the NFC West emerged as the league’s strongest division, underscoring the Cardinals’ belief that LaFleur, formerly OC at the Los Angeles Rams, is ready to guide the franchise forward.
“I couldn’t be more fired up to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and am beyond grateful to (owner) Michael (Bidwill) and (GM) Monti (Ossenfort) for this opportunity,” LaFleur said in an official statement. “Having competed against them in the NFC so many times in recent years, I know the type of talent and toughness the team has and cannot wait to get to Arizona to hit the ground running.”
LaFleur, who turns 39 in March, spent the past three seasons as offensive coordinator of the Rams under Sean McVay and, although he did not call plays in Los Angeles, the Rams’ offense thrived during his tenure, ranking fifth in passing yards, first downs and touchdowns, sixth in yards and points per game, and eighth in red-zone efficiency. Before that, LaFleur called plays during his two seasons as offensive coordinator with the New York Jets.
General manager Ossenfort emphasised LaFleur’s background and leadership qualities as a key reason behind the decision to hire him.
“In his career, Mike has been around some of the best and brightest coaches in football and has been a key contributor to highly successful teams,” Ossenfort said. “He understands what winning football looks like and what it takes to achieve it.”
LaFleur’s coaching roots run deep. He began his NFL career under Kyle Shanahan, working in Cleveland and Atlanta before serving as San Francisco’s passing game coordinator from 2017-2020. He later joined the Jets under erstwhile 49ers DC Robert Saleh. Along his journey, he has worked closely with quarterbacks such as Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan. Quarterback questions await in Arizona, but LaFleur made clear those discussions are forthcoming.
“We’ve got to go back and talk about all these decisions – quarterback, O-line, specialists,” he said. “Everything.”
Starting QB Kyler Murray, a former first overall draft pick, missed most of last season with a foot injury, while the steadying hand of Jacoby Brissett and largely unproven Kedon Slovis are also under contract for 2026.
Players welcomed the hiring of LaFleur, with wide receiver Michael Wilson calling it ‘a big weight off (our shoulders)’, adding that the team now has ‘some sort of direction going forward’.
LaFleur becomes the 11th head coach in office since the Cardinals moved to Arizona and joins rare company as one of only two sets of brothers to be NFL head coaches, along with the Harbaughs.
When asked how he would have reacted as a kid to the possibility of his sibling being elevated to the ranks of head coach, Packers HC Matt LaFleur quipped, “I’d say you’re full of sh*t!”
