CHIEFS OWNER DOWNS KICKOFF GAME SPECULATION

A potential opening-night showdown between the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and the Kansas City Chiefs now appears increasingly unlikely, after Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt suggested the fixture is no longer expected to be on the table for the NFL’s 2026 curtain-raiser.

Speaking at this week’s NFL Annual League Meeting, Hunt cast doubt on the prospect of Kansas City travelling to Seattle for the league’s traditional standalone opener on Wednesday, September 9th.

I don’t think that’s on the table anymore,” Hunt claimed. “I think, from a league standpoint, there would be some concern whether [Patrick Mahomes] would be ready to go.”

The comments appear to stem from ongoing uncertainty surrounding Patrick Mahomes and his recovery timeline following the knee injury that prematurely ended his 2025 season. While the former MVP has been widely reported to be progressing well in rehab, the NFL may be reluctant to hang its flagship kickoff slot on a player whose Week 1 availability remains uncertain.

We’ve all seen some of the videos of [Mahomes’] rehab and, by every indication, he’s ahead of schedule — and has worked really hard to be ahead of schedule — but my guess is the [NFL] won’t want to take that risk,” Hunt added.

That development, should it come to pass when the 2026 NFL schedule emerges in the coming weeks, materially changes the early thinking around Seattle’s opener.

As Gridiron reported last week, the Chiefs had loomed as one of the most compelling options for the Seahawks’ banner-raising night at Lumen Field, offering immediate marquee appeal and a ratings-friendly national draw. With Kansas City seemingly moving down the board, attention will now turn to the most plausible alternatives.

The most obvious remaining option is a Super Bowl LX rematch against the New England Patriots, a fixture that would give the NFL an immediate narrative hook while avoiding any uncertainty tied to Mahomes’ health. That game would carry both championship gravitas and a natural continuation of February’s storylines.

Beyond that, the Dallas Cowboys remain a classic league television play — a guaranteed ratings magnet regardless of competitive context — while the Chicago Bears would offer a similarly strong national audience pull, especially with both Seattle’s NFC West rivals, the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams, playing in Melbourne less than 24 hours later.
