COMMANDERS RE-INTRODUCE ANOTHER BLAST OF THE PAST

The Washington Commanders have unveiled a new alternate uniform combination, designed to evoke memories of the franchise’s most successful era.

Using the 93rd anniversary of the team’s creation, the club — which was obviously known by its previous, controversial, Redskins moniker at the height of its success — revealed what it is referring to as ‘Super Bowl Era’ uniform and helmet to pay homage to the three Lombardi-winning campaigns of 1982, ‘87 and ‘91.

“We are excited to celebrate Washington’s rich history with these iconic, Super Bowl Era uniforms this season,” team president Mark Clouse said. “Ever since Josh Harris and our ownership group acquired the team back in 2023, they’ve placed great value in finding ways to connect the past and present and pay homage to those that made the Burgundy & Gold what it is today.”

The ‘new’ white jersey features burgundy numbers with gold outlines and gold stripes on the sleeves, while the nameplates on the reverse will have burgundy letters with the same gold outline. The burgundy pants and socks will include gold and white stripes. The helmet, meanwhile, will also have the iconic look of the 1980s and ‘90s, incorporating a gold face mask as well as white and gold stripes down the centre of the helmet alongside the team’s latest logo.

The combination will be worn three times during the 2025 season, debuting November 2nd on Sunday Night Football as the Commanders — who recently revealed ambitions to build a new home on the site of the previously-used RFK Stadium – face the Seattle Seahawks, before also being brought out for the game against Denver at the end of the same month. The final appearance will come on Christmas Day, when Washington plays historic rival Dallas.

“These uniforms honour the most successful era of our franchise — one that reflects a culture of excellence and encompasses many historical moments and special memories amongst our fanbase,” Clouse continued. “We look forward to bringing that nostalgic feeling back to fans, while incorporating a modern feel for our next generation of fans.”

Officially licensed Super Bowl Era jerseys will be available for purchase in early September, but the announcement has already led to predictable calls for the team to revert to its previous nickname — something Harris has repeatedly said is unlikely to happen.
