The Denver Broncos have rewarded Sean Payton’s franchise turnaround with a new five-year contract that keeps the veteran head coach in Denver through the 2030 season.

Owner and CEO Greg Penner announced the agreement on Thursday, replacing the final two years of Payton’s previous deal and ensuring that both the head coach and general manager George Paton are now under contract for the same period. Financial terms were not disclosed.

“We’re thrilled for Sean to continue leading our team as head coach, building on our progress during such an exciting time for the Broncos,” Penner said. “Over the last three seasons, we’ve made significant strides on the field and established a strong foundation for even greater success. Sean’s leadership, football expertise and winning mindset have helped transform our organisation, and we are excited about what lies ahead.”

Payton, who arrived in Denver in 2023 after the Broncos surrendered premium draft capital to acquire his rights from the New Orleans Saints, has overseen a dramatic revival for the storied franchise. After ending the Broncos’ lengthy playoff drought in 2024, Denver reached the AFC Championship Game last season as Payton compiled a 32-19 record during his first three years in charge.

The 62-year-old said the decision to commit long term was straightforward, pointing to the alignment throughout the organisation.

“I think it makes all the sense in the world,” Payton said. “I’m super appreciative of that opportunity. It’s really about doing everything we can to continue to keep winning. You spend a lot of time trying to get to where we are, and now it’s about sustaining it.”

A former Super Bowl-winning coach with the Saints, Payton has repeatedly highlighted the stability provided by the Walton-Penner ownership group and his working relationship with George Paton, who himself signed a five-year extension last month. Payton described the arrangement as a ‘triangle of ownership’ involving Penner, the ownership family and the front office. Payton, meanwhile, has been quick to recognise potential failings in his leadership, having handed offensive coordinator duties to Davis Webb in February in a move designed to further modernise the operation.

The head coach’s new agreement also removes any uncertainty around the franchise as Denver attempts to build on its deepest postseason run since winning Super Bowl 50. The Broncos are also one of a number of organisations with new stadium plans on the horizon and securing their head coach removes one potential distraction from that project.

Currently second among active NFL head coaches in career victories behind Andy Reid, Payton owns a 184-108 regular-season record across his stints with the Saints and Broncos.
