GIANTS BUY INTO STABILITY WITH DOUBLE EXTENSION

The New York Giants have secured two of the most experienced members of John Harbaugh’s roster after agreeing contract extensions with quarterback Jameis Winston and left guard Jon Runyan Jr.

Winston has agreed a two-year deal worth $13m, while Runyan’s two-year, $22m extension includes $21.5m guaranteed. Both players had been due to become free agents following the season but are now under contract through 2028, while the agreements also provide immediate help to a Giants team operating close to the salary cap limit. New York was reportedly around $1.18m above the cap before restructuring the two contracts, although the precise savings created by each extension have not yet been disclosed.

Together, the moves secure experienced protection around second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart. Runyan will again start in front of him at left guard, while Winston remains the veteran alternative should Dart be unavailable. Winston’s importance to the Giants also extends beyond the conventional duties of a back-up. The 32-year-old has become one of the most prominent voices in New York’s locker room and has formed a close relationship with Dart since the latter arrived as a first-round pick in 2025.

“Jameis is a great leader, man,” running back Tyrone Tracy Jr said during the summer. “He’s a great team-mate. He’s always there. He’s always helping out [the second team], [the third team], even the [starters]. He’s always picking us up. So, I think, with Jameis and Jaxson, we have a great quarterback room.”

That relationship assumes greater importance given Dart’s physical playing style and the concussion that cost him two games during his rookie campaign. Winston appeared three times last season, making two starts and completing 37 of 66 passes for 567 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The former first overall draft pick has started 89 games during an 11-year career with Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Cleveland and the Giants. His career totals stand at 24,792 passing yards, 156 touchdowns and 113 interceptions.

Meanwhile, Runyan, 29, has started all 29 games he has played since joining New York on a three-year, $30m contract in 2024 and emerged from the summer firmly established at left guard despite earlier uncertainty surrounding his position. New York now has four members of its expected starting offensive line secured beyond this season, with left tackle Andrew Thomas and rookie Sisi Mauigoa are under contract through at least 2029, the latter with a fifth-year option open to the team for 2030. Right guard Greg Van Roten is signed through 2028, leaving center John Michael Schmitz as the only starter without a multi-year commitment.

Runyan has made 79 starts among 96 regular season appearances since being selected by Green Bay in the sixth round of the 2020 draft, and played in five postseason games during his four seasons with the Packers.
