GIANTS RELEASE DANIEL JONES
The New York Giants and QB Daniel Jones are no more, with the former sixth-overall pick going from starter to street in a matter of days.
The team confirmed that, following his benching after the Giants played Carolina in Munich — and an apparent spell as scout team safety in recent practice sessions — Jones had asked to be released from the team in order to see what other opportunities might present themselves as the 2024 regular season heads into its most crucial phase.
“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” Giants owner John Mara said in an official team statement. “We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organisation, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Jones will now be subject to waivers, but that does not guarantee that he will necessarily be picked up by any of the other 31 teams, primarily because the system ensures that any claimant would be responsible for picking up the near $12m the former Duke Blue Devil is guaranteed for 2024, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
