JAGS’ NEW SYSTEM CAN BE SUCCESS, BELIEVES LAWRENCE
Now heading into his fifth season as an NFL quarterback, Trevor Lawrence is still trying to live up to the hype he generated coming out of college, but feels like the fresh start awaiting Jacksonville this season could be the opportunity he has been waiting for.
After suffering through Urban Meyer’s brief tenure as head coach, and only touching brief salvation under Doug Pederson, Lawrence is hoping that the arrival of former Tampa Bay OC Liam Coen can be the spur that gets the Jaguars over the hump and competing, not just for a place in the playoffs, but for the glory of a first Super Bowl.
“You know, been an up-and-down [experience] for the first four years, for me and our team and our situation,” the quarterback told the Pardon My Take podcast. “This is my third head coach, so I’ve had a lot of turnover, a lot of change. But I really feel good about the situation we’re in. I love Coach Coen and the whole staff. And all the guys that were brought in in free agency are just good dudes, good players, so I really feel like we’ve done some great things this offseason.”
Addressing the offense specifically, Lawrence was equally effusive, clearly believing that Coen’s ideas will not only benefit the team, but also his own game under center.
“I have a lot of confidence in the changes we’ve made, the system we’re running,” he enthused.”This system is tried and true — L.A. runs it, Minnesota runs it now with [Kevin] O’Connell, all those teams, and they have a lot of success with it. It’s a great system for quarterbacks. Where I’m at in my career, year five, it’s time to time to go and start winning consistently, not just that team where it’s like no one really takes you seriously. You want to be that team that’s always competing for playoffs, Super Bowls and you’re in the hunt, you know?
“So, I see it through that lens of ‘It’s year five and I feel like this is getting into my prime’. I got a lot of good years left ahead of me and I need to really turn it on. I think what we’ve built around me, and what they’ve done this offseason, has been a great start.”
Lawrence also revealed that he has kept on the good side of his new head coach by not bringing up Coen’s frankly embarrassing first attempt at the Jaguars fans’ ‘Duuuvaaaaal’ call…
“I was there that day, I was in that press conference, but I didn’t give him too much heat on it because I know everybody else was,” the quarterback explained. “I let him breathe a little bit on it, and I think he’s coached up on it now.”
