Justin Simmons has brought the curtain down on one of the most consistent defensive careers of the past decade, announcing his retirement from the NFL on his own terms.

The two-time All-Pro safety confirmed he is stepping away from the game at 32, — exactly ten years to the day he was drafted — by signing a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Denver Broncos. In a video released by the team, Simmons left no doubt about where he considers home.

“Being a Denver Bronco was more than just a team,” he claimed. “It was my heart, my home and my story.”

It is a fitting full stop for a player who became the defining defensive presence of Denver’s post-Super Bowl 50 era. Drafted in the third round in 2016, Simmons evolved from a core special teamer into one of the league’s most reliable ball-hawking safeties, earning multiple All-Pro honours and building a reputation for durability and production.

Across nine seasons — eight in Denver prior to a brief spell with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 — Simmons amassed 32 interceptions, at least two in every year, alongside 666 tackles and 71 passes defended. Those numbers only tell part of the story, however, as his leadership during a transitional period for the franchise, bridging the gap between championship contention and rebuild, made him a cornerstone in a locker room searching for identity.

In a longer farewell message, Simmons pointed to that connection with the city and fanbase as central to his decision, thanking ‘the best fans in the world and stressing that his ties to the organisation will continue beyond his playing days. Indeed, there had been hints that Simmons might yet return, as he sat out the 2025 season, waiting for the right opportunity to continue playing, but now he has chosen closure, ensuring his career ends where it began.

For the Broncos, it marks the departure of one of the few constants of the past decade. For Simmons, it cements a legacy defined by a combination of production, consistency and presence from an an All-Pro performer.
