KEY CASUALTIES OF CUTDOWN CULL

Craig Llewellyn NFL

The most brutal day of the NFL calendar is here, with players new and old learning if they will have somewhere to ply their trade in 2025.

The days between the end of training camp and preseason games and the start of the new regular season are often cited by coaches and GMs as one of the toughest periods on the schedule as they have to inform hopefuls that their dream is over and veterans that it may be the end of their career in the top flight.

“It was hard to sit down in front of those guys and be honest and tell them the why, tell them the things they do well, tell them the areas that they can improve,” first-time head coach Brian Schottenheimer told the Dallas Cowboys website. “I think that’s important because, anytime you have those hard conversations, whether they’re back or not back [on the roster]… they hopefully can use that feedback to improve themselves as a player.”

The lucky ones may have found themselves traded to a new home, whether or not they appreciated it at the time. Kenny Pickett, Amari Cooper (both to the Raiders), Sam Howell, John Metchie (both Eagles), Tim Patrick, Khaeln Saunders (both Jaguars), Derrick Nnadi (Chiefs), Brian Robinson Jr, Skyy Moore (both 49ers), Harrison Phillips (Jets) and Luke Fortner (Saints) are among those to have been found new teams, but the majority of the hundreds of players who saw their names scrubbed from 90-man rosters over the past 48 hours now face the prospect of missing out entirely if not claimed off waivers or reinstated on a practice squad.

Among those enduring the tension are players who have made a name for themselves, if only in their local fanbases, in the past few seasons:
