LAWRENCE: TRAVIS HUNTER IS ‘UNBELIEVABLE’
Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter arrives in the NFL amid a lot of hype around his ability to play both offense and defense to a high level, but his quarterback in Jacksonville has no doubt the rookie will be a star.
Speaking on the Pardon My Take podcast, Trevor Lawrence revealed that he had been impressed by what he had seen from the former Colorado college star and, although their time together has been limited to date, believes that Hunter already outshines others in the league.
“I will say, just [from] my interactions with him, he’s unbelievable as far as the condition and shape he’s in,” the fifth-year QB explained. “I mean, this guy can run all day and plays DB, plays receiver. He’ll run a post route or whatever and, say we’ll miss it or I want to run it different, he’ll run it again. Just come right back. Among other guys I’ve played with, no one does that. It’s not shade on anybody else, but it’s like no one’s trying to run 50 yards full speed again right when they just did it.
“So, it’s stuff like that. He’s a super hard worker, just a good guy. You can tell he doesn’t have a lot of issues going on, or stuff where it’s like he’s distracted. He just seems very focused and sticks to himself.”
Lawrence is obviously biased when it comes to which side of the ball his new team-mate should play on, but has already seen what a weapon Hunter can be on defense.
“So, his first day over at DB, I was like, ‘We’re throwing every ball at him’ — but he’s pretty freaking good at corner too!,” the former Clemson passer smiled. “But, a guy like him could do whatever he wanted to do. It’s going to be interesting in the NFL [to see] how much can you play both ways? I don’t know but, if there’s a guy that can do it, he can do it. We’ll see how that plays out — but, yeah, definitely that first day, I was like, ‘I’m throwing every ball at you, so you come back to offense’…”
Lawrence and Hunter have already bonded off the field, having shot a commercial for a well-known apparel brand that allowed the pair to show off their natural personae amidst a ‘special’ handshake.
“It was an Adidas commercial and that was part of it,” the quarterback explained. “It’s a little bit manufactured but, yeah, he’s good at that stuff. I let him dance and do all that and I’m like, ‘All right, he’s got it’. He’s he’s got a big personality. He’s got a lot of expectations. I think they said he’s a culture changer, but also a sport changer — like he was going to change the future of football.”
