LIONS NAMED TO 2026 MUNICH GAME
One of the NFL’s premier wide receivers will be playing a game in the motherland in 2026, with the league announcing that the Detroit Lions will play in Munich as part of the 2026 International Series.
“It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother’s home country of Germany since coming to the league,” said Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. “I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I’ve gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country. Their support for me and the country’s instant connection to the Lions brand is inspiring, and I’m looking forward to our team getting to showcase Detroit football on an international scale.”
The Lions are one of many teams to hold marketing rights in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and will now be taking part in the sixth game to be held on German soil, and the third in Munich since 2022. The NFL has also announced a return to Munich in 2028 sandwiched by games in Berlin in 2027 and 2029. The Lions own a 1-1 record in International Series game, with both of their previous games played at Wembley Stadium — including a thrilling comeback win over Atlanta, widely expected to be their opponent at the Allianz Stadium this time around.
“We are thrilled to be playing internationally — and specifically in Munich — for the 2026 season,” Lions president & CEO Rod Wood commented. “As an organisation, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”
The 2026 International Series will be the biggest so far, with nine games planned in eight stadiums in seven countries across four continents. 2026 has games in London, Munich, Mexico, Madrid, Paris, Rio and a first ever regular season game down under, with the Melbourne Cricket Ground hosting the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.
