Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have once again reset the quarterback market, agreeing to a reworked contract that makes the three-time Super Bowl MVP the first player in NFL history to be tied to a deal worth more than $500m.

The agreement adds two years to Mahomes’ existing contract and keeps him under club control through the 2033 season. According to NFL Network, the revised pact carries a total value of $504.75m, with performance escalators capable of pushing the figure even higher.

The original 10-year, $450m extension signed in 2020 was already regarded as one of the most team-friendly superstar contracts in football. While quarterback salaries have since exploded — with Dak Prescott becoming the first player to reach $60m per season — the latest restructuring restores Mahomes to the top of the market and further cements his long-term partnership with the franchise.

Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt hailed the agreement in a statement.

“Since joining the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, Patrick Mahomes has transformed our organisation in every way imaginable,” Hunt noted. “Patrick’s pursuit of greatness has helped us achieve historic success on the field and his leadership and character have made him one of the most respected figures in all of sports. We are thrilled that Patrick and his family will continue to call Kansas City home for many years to come.”

“Patrick is a once-in-a-lifetime player and a once-in-a-generation leader,” general manager Brett Veach added. “This landmark agreement reflects not only what he has accomplished, but what we believe lies ahead. Our commitment has always been to build around Patrick and compete for championships, and this extension ensures that vision remains intact.”

The extension represents the latest chapter in an extraordinary relationship between player and franchise. Since being selected 10th overall in the 2017 draft, Mahomes has led Kansas City to five Super Bowl appearances, capturing three Lombardi Trophies and earning Super Bowl MVP honours each time. He has also won two league MVP awards and established himself as the defining quarterback of his generation. Head coach Andy Reid recently described Mahomes, who is currently rehabbing the serious knee injury he suffered towards the back end of the 2025 season, as ‘the whole package’, praising not only his talent but his leadership and influence within the organisation.

From the Chiefs’ perspective, the move is about preserving competitive continuity as much as rewarding past success. With Reid still in place and Veach continuing to shape the roster, securing Mahomes through his age 38 season provides the organisation with the stability to continue chasing championships deep into the next decade.
