Mahomes wins third MVP in Chiefs triumph

Gridiron NFL

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes was voted the winner of the Pete Rozelle Trophy as Super Bowl LVIII’s most valuable player after leading the Chiefs to an overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Mahomes completed 34 of 46 attempts (equating to a 73.9 percent success rate) for 333 yards and two touchdowns an a 99.3 QB rating, while adding 66 rushing yards as the Chiefs overcome a 10-point deficit en route to a 25-22 win.

The Kansas City offense had a poor first half and trailed 10-3 at the half-time break after San Francisco used a swarming defensive performance to throttle Mahomes and co. But the QB regrouped his team during the prolonged interval and went toe-to-toe with the 49ers to send the game to overtime. When the Niners could only manage a field goal on their first possession of the extra period, it opened the door for Mahomes, who marched his team down the field and stole the win with a three-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman.

“I guess, at this point, I take it for granted, but I know we’re in every single game I’ve ever played with him — no matter what the score is or how much time is left,” teammate Travis Kelce commented. “That guy has magic in his right arm.”

It was only the second Super Bowl ever to go to overtime, as the Chiefs became the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the 2003-04 New England Patriots. Kansas City also recorded the seventh comeback of 10-or-more points in a Super Bowl, a figure which also includes the team’s Super Bowl LIV and LVII victories.

Mahomes, who was also named Super Bowl LIV and LVII MVP, is the third player ever to win three such awards in the big game, joining Tom Brady (five) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Montana (three). Mahomes is also the third player ever to be named Super Bowl MVP in consecutive seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers Bart Starr (Super Bowls I and II) and Terry Bradshaw (Super Bowls XIII and XIV). He is the fifth quarterback with at least three Super Bowl titles, joining Brady (seven) and Pro Football Hall of Famers Bradshaw (four), Montana (four) and Troy Aikman (three). It marks the 33rd time that a quarterback has been named Super Bowl MVP.

On his way to Lombardi success, Mahomes also recorded his 15th career postseason win, and now trails only Brady (35) and Montana (16) for the most postseason wins by a quarterback all-time.

“There have been a lot of great quarterbacks in the history of the National Football League, and a pretty good one who won a bunch of Super Bowls over the last 20 years,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told the media after Super Bowl LVIII. “But, at 28 years old, Patrick’s already put together a very impressive resumé — and I know he’s going to build on it.”
