McLAURIN REQUESTS TRADE AMID CONTRACT IMPASSE

Washington stalwart Terry McLaurin has requested the ability to seek a new home after claiming that talks over a contract extension with the Commanders have stalled.

The 29-year-old is seeking a new deal commensurate with those signed by the likes of D.K. Metcalf, Garrett Wilson and, just this week, Courtland Sutton, but has been unable to make progress with Commanders management over the offseason. McLaurin is entering the final year of a three-year deal with Washington, having been a rock on which the franchise’s resurgence has relied. Remarkable durability — the wideout has started 101 of 104 games and last missed an assignment in Week 16 of the 2020 campaign — and productivity above his paygrade provided the perfect foil for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels’ stellar first season, where the Commanders reached the NFC Championship game.

Although he skipped both mandatory and voluntary offseason work outs with the team, and appeared set to do the same when training camp opened last week, the veteran has now decided to ‘hold in’, attending practice even though he is unable to take part due to a lingering ankle injury.

This has been somewhere where I’ve always wanted to be,” McLaurin told reporters before camp started. “I understand everything’s a business but, at the same time, I want to put myself in a position where I’m valued and I feel appreciated and things like that. Unfortunately, that hasn’t transpired the way I wanted it to.”

While on the PUP list, McLaurin counts against the Commanders’ 90-player offseason roster cap and can participate in meetings but not on-field work. He can return at any point.

McLaurin, who turns 30 at the start of the 2025 season, is reckoned to have lost more than $800,000 in fines and bonuses during his holdout, but insists that it would have been worth it should he land a deal that represents his current standing amongst the league’s elite wide receivers, where nine players average at least $30m a year.

I feel like I’m one of the best receivers in this league, and it’s not because of me just feeling that way,” McLaurin told reporters. “I feel like I’ve proven it — and I’ll continue to work hard to prove it.”

Having topped 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past five seasons, most spent with journeymen QBs under center before the 2024 drafting of Daniels, McLaurin recorded the second highest touchdown tally in the entire NFL as he connected with the rookie, putting up 13 receiving scores in a career season.

The impasse is likely because the Commanders remain wary of McLaurin’s age and the fact that receivers, like running backs, over 30 tend to erop off, both in production and durability. But the franchise also needs to weigh their decision against a roster that, behind the All-Pro, comprises former 49er Deebo Samuel — who turns 30 in January — alongside Noah Brown, Michael Gallup, both currently 29, K.J. Osborn, Chris Moore, Luke McCaffrey and assorted rookies. (Incidentally, the roster as currently appearing on the club’s official website also lists six-year veteran Michael Strachan — with an alleged age of 72!)

General manager Adam Peters has not commented directly on McLaurin’s trade request, suggesting that the Commanders will ‘do everything we can in order to get a deal done’.
