The Washington Commanders’ draft weekend was soured by news that Monte Coleman, a cornerstone of the club’s Super Bowl-era defenses and member of the franchise’s Ring of Fame, had died at the age of 68.

A model of durability and consistency, Coleman spent his entire 16-year NFL career in Washington, appearing in 215 games and helping the then Redskins to three Super Bowl titles during their most successful period. His 999 solo tackles rank second in franchise history, while his 49.5 sacks and 17 interceptions underline his impact across multiple defensive roles.

Monte Coleman was one of the greatest players in Washington history,” managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement on the team website. “His durability and leadership set the standard for what it meant to suit up for the Burgundy & Gold.”

A late-round pick in 1979, Coleman developed into a defining figure of the franchise’s identity through the 1980s and early 1990s, later remaining close to the game through coaching and community work.
