NACUA CAPS CONTROVERSIAL WEEK WITH CAREER NIGHT

It was another roller-coaster 24 hours in a week of wild rides for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, whose standout performance on Thursday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks was overshadowed by a series of off-field controversies that began earlier in the week and extended into the postgame spotlight.

On Tuesday, during an internet livestream appearance with well-known streamers Adin Ross and Mikyle ‘N3on’ Rafiq, Nacua performed a gesture — rubbing his hands together — that has been widely interpreted as an antisemitic stereotype. The segment was framed as a proposed ‘next touchdown celebration’, an idea that Nacua initially embraced but later acknowledged that he did not understand the meaning of the gesture.

At the time, I had no idea this act was antisemitic in nature and perpetuated harmful stereotypes against Jewish people,” he wrote in an Instagram statement. “I deeply apologise to anyone who was offended by my actions as I do not stand for any form of racism, bigotry or hate of another group of people.”

The incident drew swift criticism from the public and led the NFL to issue a league-wide statement reinforcing that it ‘strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and derogatory behavior directed towards any group or individual’, adding that ‘hatred has no place in our sport or society’.

Rams head coach Sean McVay publicly supported Nacua, emphasising his character and potential for growth. McVay said team leaders would continue to ‘put our arm around him and help him learn and grow’, confirming that Nacua was ‘very apologetic’ after the incident and noting that the player didn’t fully understand what he had done when it occurred. McVay added that he didn’t believe the episode was a distraction for the team going into Thursday’s game.

On the field, Nacua turned in one of the greatest performances of his NFL career, finishing with 12 receptions for 225 receiving yards and two touchdowns in a dramatic 38-37 overtime loss, marking a career high for yardage in a regular-season game.

However, controversy continued into the postgame period. Nacua had already drawn scrutiny for critical comments about NFL officiating during the livestream, in which he suggested some officials make calls ‘just to get on TV’. In a since-deleted social media post after the Rams’ loss, Nacua appeared to again mock the referees, prompting the NFL to fined him $25,000 for ‘criticising officials publicly’.

On the subject of the criticism, Nacua passed off his postgame comments as emotional — again citing a naivety that many might find hard to believe.

It was just a lack of awareness and just some frustration,” he reasoned, before adding that he understood referees ‘are normal human beings, too’. Nacua also said that he sent the post — news of which only reached McVay’s ears during the regular postgame press conference — ‘in a moment of frustration after a tough, intense game’.

The undercurrent of the week’s events has generated broader commentary about the responsibilities that star athletes should adhere to off the field. Some analysts have suggested that how Nacua and others handle public platforms can affect both personal and team reputations. For now, the Rams and Nacua have publicly worked to contain the situation, with the head coach reiterating that the focus would remain on football while also acknowledging the off-field learning curve facing his young star.

I love him, and we’re going to help him learn and grow,” McVay said, stressing his belief in Nacua’s underlying character.
