PAYTON TO PASS ON PLAYCALLING

Sean Payton has never been afraid of a decisive call. In January, that instinct arguably cost the Denver Broncos a shot at Super Bowl LX.

Early in the AFC Championship Game against New England, Payton bypassed a makeable field goal, opting instead to press for a touchdown. Denver came away empty-handed. In a tight contest ultimately played without starting quarterback Bo Nix — sidelined by a broken ankle suffered in the Divisional Round win over Buffalo — those lost points loomed large as the Broncos fell one step short of the Super Bowl.

A month later at the NFL Scouting Combine, Payton signalled a different kind of gamble — one aimed at reshaping Denver’s offensive future.

The Broncos head coach announced that newly promoted offensive coordinator Davis Webb will assume primary play-calling duties in 2026, a responsibility Payton has held for most of his 18-year head coaching career.

I think it’s going to help our team and I’ll do whatever it takes to support him,” Payton said. “It’s not something I would do if I didn’t think it will help our team.”

Pressed on why now was the right time to hand over the reins, Payton pointed to Webb’s profile.

It’s only if there’s someone that you feel like it is good enough to do that,” he said, describing the 31-year-old as “extremely talented” and “quicker.”

Webb, previously Denver’s pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, has been instrumental in Nix’s development since arriving on Payton’s staff in 2023. That steady ascent culminated in the Broncos’ AFC Championship appearance, even if Nix’s injury ultimately altered the trajectory of the postseason.

The decision to elevate Webb follows interest from elsewhere; the Ravens, Bills and Raiders all interviewed him for head coaching vacancies during the 2026 hiring cycle. After parting ways with Joe Lombardi, Denver moved swiftly to promote from within.

Payton confirmed that Nix was not involved in the call to pass on play-calling duties, noting he had been weighing the move throughout the 2025 season.

The symbolism is hard to ignore. A coach whose aggressive instinct shaped both triumphs and near-misses is now choosing delegation over control. After a season in which one early fourth-down decision proved costly, Payton is betting that empowering Webb — and adding another voice in Nix’s ear on game days — will sharpen Denver’s edge rather than blunt it.

In 2026, the Broncos’ offensive direction will no longer run solely through Payton’s headset.
