PRO BOWL TO PUT FLAG FRONT AND CENTRE
The NFL Pro Bowl is on the move again in a bid to better integrate it with the biggest event on the league’s calendar.
The annual All-Star event, which for the last three years has consisted of skills competitions and a flag football game, has taken place the weekend before Super Bowl week and often at an entirely different location. The 2026 event, however, will take place during the week of Super Bowl LX in the Bay Area, tying it into football’s biggest occasion.
The showcase will continue to highlight flag football, featuring an AFC vs. NFC 7-on-7 game at the Moscone Center, which will be transformed into a custom flag football arena for the event.
“We are dedicated to making the Pro Bowl Games a prime-time television event that will enhance Super Bowl week,” said Burke Magnus, ESPN president of content. “Our shared vision focuses on using a production approach that spotlights the world’s best players in a manner unique to the Pro Bowl Games format, while highlighting flag football and its emergence on the global sports landscape.”
Flag football continues to be an integral part of the NFL’s participation and development strategy. As the most inclusive, accessible football format, it is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, with more than 20 million players across 100 countries.
In partnership with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), flag was confirmed on the programme for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, marking a historic moment for the sport and the global flag community, and NFL clubs recently approved allowing players to compete in the LA28 Games. As the league discusses the terms of such participation with the NFLPA, the football format will not only continue to be part of Pro Bowl Games but will become the hallmark of the event, which will focus on the NFL’s top athletes playing each other in a high-level competitive flag game, as well as additional flag activities at all levels going on throughout the week.
Fan voting for the Pro Bowl, which begins over Thanksgiving, will again determine rosters through a combination of nods from fans, players and coaches. New this year, the league and its partners will collectively celebrate the AFC and NFC rosters in new, elevated ways, including unique highlight packages, in-stadium moments, broadcast integration, helmet decals and more. For the game, the format will be 7-on-7 and take place on a 50-yard field with 10-yard end zones. Scoring plays will be worth the traditional six points with a one-point conversion from the five-yard line and a two-point option from the 10-yard line.
The event will be televised exclusively on ESPN, Disney XD and ESPN Deportes, with coverage starting at 6:30pm ET on February 3rd 2026. The main flag game will air at 8pm ET. Pre-event programming, including player features and roster reveals, will air earlier that week.
