RAGNOW RETURN RULED OUT

Craig Llewellyn NFL

The planned comeback by veteran center Frank Ragnow has officially been called off after what the Detroit Lions reported as a ‘grade 3 hamstring strain’ caused him to fail a physical.

Ragnow, just 29, had stunned the NFL prior to the weekend by ending his retirement in hopes of rejoining Detroit for the run-in of their 2025 campaign. But now, with his hamstring injury ruling him out ‘for the remainder of the regular season’, the Lions have confirmed he will not rejoin the roster — with head coach Dan Campbell adding that no talks about returning in 2026 have taken place.

The setback represents a major blow to Detroit’s offensive line as it chases a playoff berth; with Ragnow not returning to the field, the Lions will have to rely on their existing — beaten-up — line depth to carry them through the stretch run, which began with a crucial Thanksgiving Day defeat at home to NFC North rival Green Bay on Thursday.

One of the biggest implications of Ragnow’s failed return is what it means for quarterback Jared Goff. Ragnow was widely viewed as the best hope for shoring up the Lions’ interior offensive line, protecting Goff and giving him time to operate. So far this season, the Lions’ line has struggled to maintain the sort of consistency that has seen the Motor City return as postseason regulars of late. Goff has been under pressure far more often than the club would like — he’s been sacked 26 times already this season — and inserting Ragnow might have offered a dramatic reduction in pressure, potentially helping restore the kind of poise and efficiency Goff showed in recent playoff runs.

Ragnow’s absence only serves to underline the team’s O-line issues, as the interior has had to cope with injuries, role shuffles and the departure of key veterans since the start of the campaign, making the Lions’ ground game, which once could mask interior flaws, more boom-or-bust. While Jahmyr Gibbs is doing his best to ensure that Detroit remains second in the NFL in both rushing yards and yards per carry, a lot of that production now comes from explosive plays rather than consistent, methodical drives.

Even with Ragnow, however, some analysts caution that he wouldn’t have solved every problem, as the team’s issues aren’t limited solely to line play, but also include scheme, injuries elsewhere — notably at receiver and tight end — and even with the pass rush, despite the presence of Aidan Hutchinson.

For now, Ragnow’s failed physical removes a key wildcard option for the Lions’ season — and locks the team into a battle to secure a postseason spot of the same name. For a team already on the outside of playoff positioning, that’s a heavy blow, even if Detroit is far from eliminated with five weeks to run.

For Ragnow, meanwhile, the commitment to return after retiring due to the battering his body had taken has led to fans affirming his legacy within the franchise.
