RAVENS HIRE MINTER AS NEXT HEAD COACH

The Baltimore Ravens have their next head coach, and he is a familiar presence in the building.

Jesse Minter has agreed terms to become just the fourth head coach in franchise history, succeeding John Harbaugh after his 18-year run. The hire came one day after Minter’s in-person second interview in Baltimore, ending a competitive pursuit that included interest from the Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns.

I am truly honoured to serve as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens,” Minter stated. “This is an organisation whose values, culture and tradition of excellence reflect everything I believe about the game of football and how it should be played.”

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti cited Minter’s vision and deep understanding of the organisation as decisive factors.

Jesse was impressive throughout our incredibly thorough interview process,” Bisciotti revealed. “He clearly understands the values, high expectations and history of the Ravens, and he has a great vision for the future. Jesse’s football acumen is outstanding, and that’s been proven by the impact he’s made throughout his entire coaching career.”

General manager Eric DeCosta echoed that sentiment, pointing to Minter’s background and leadership traits when describing the erstwhile L.A. Chargers defensive coordinator as ‘a strong leader who possesses a brilliant football mind and a spirit that will resonate with our players and fanbase alike’.

Minter, 42, now returns to the organisation where his NFL career began. He spent four seasons on Harbaugh’s staff from 2017–20, rising from defensive assistant to defensive backs coach. He later became Vanderbilt’s defensive coordinator, then followed Jim Harbaugh to Michigan, where he coordinated the Wolverines’ national championship defense. When Harbaugh took over at the Chargers, Minter followed as defensive coordinator.

His defensive résumé is strong. In his first season with the Chargers, the unit jumped from 24th in points allowed to first, while finishing 11th in yards. Last season, Los Angeles ranked fifth in total defense and ninth in scoring defense.

Minter’s scheme emphasises versatility, disguise and player clarity, a philosophy shaped alongside Mike Macdonald during their time together in Baltimore and Michigan. The Ravens are betting that same blueprint can stabilise a defense that has struggled to close games over the past two seasons.

A product of a lifelong football family, Minter now takes over at the Under Armour Performance Center with a clear mandate: pair a resurgent defense with Baltimore’s elite offensive talent and push the franchise back into championship contention.
