RAVENS RELEASE TUCKER AMIDST INVESTIGATION

Craig Llewellyn NFL

The Baltimore Ravens have cut ties with their record-breaking kicker, Justin Tucker, as he continues to face allegations of ‘improper conduct’.

In a case eerily reminiscent of that involving now Browns QB Deshaun Watson, 13-year veteran Tucker is accused of behaving inappropriately by no fewer than 16 massage therapists in the Baltimore area, all of whom claim that the incidents occurred between 2012, when the kicker joined the Ravens as an undrafted rookie, and 2016.

A Super Bowl winner in his first NFL campaign, Tucker woud go on to be the most accurate kicker in league history, with a reputation for having the biggest leg after converting an NFL-record 66 yard field goal attempt. As a rookie, he converted 30 of 33 field goals during the regular season and went a perfect 4-for-4 during the Ravens’ postseason run to Super Bowl XLVII. Even that, however, was not enough to persuade the Ravens to hold on to the Texas grad for another season.

“Sometimes football decisions are incredibly difficult, and this is one of those instances,” general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement that avoided directly addressing the biggest reason for Tucker being shown the door.

Considering our current roster, we have made the tough decision to release Justin Tucker, [who] created many significant and unforgettable moments in Ravens history. His reliability, focus, drive, resilience and extraordinary talent made him one of the league’s best kickers for over a decade. We are grateful for Justin’s many contributions while playing for the Ravens. We sincerely wish him and his family the very best in this next chapter of their lives.”

The Ravens’ current roster includes recently-drafted Tyler Loop, who now appears to have a clear run to becoming Tucker’s immediate replacement. It is probably no coincidence that the veteran’s release follows his worst season in Baltimore, in which he missed no fewer than eight field goals (22-of-30) and appeared a shadow of his former clutch self.

Tucker has yet to comment on his release, but maintained his innocence when news of the accusations broke at the start of the year.

“I maintain I did not act inappropriately at any point before, during, or after a professional bodywork treatment session, nor have I ever been told I am unwelcome at any massage therapy provider,” Tucker said in a statement to OutKick in February. “These claims are simply not true.

“Throughout the last four weeks, I have spent countless hours replaying every interaction I have had with bodywork professionals over the last thirteen years. I can assure whoever is reading this that I have never intended to disrespect anyone, cross any boundary, or make anyone feel uncomfortable in any way whatsoever.

“It devastates me to know that anyone I have worked with would not have felt respected and valued as a professional but, more importantly, as a person, and to anyone who has felt otherwise, I am sorry. I want you to know I am committed to ensuring that everyone I interact with continues to feel that I respect them and care about them as a human being.”
