SCHEDULE 2026: THANKSGIVING TO SPAN FIVE DAYS
The NFL’s annual grip on the Thanksgiving holiday is set to become even stronger in 2026 after the league unveiled an expanded five-game slate stretching from Wednesday night through Black Friday as part of its latest schedule release.
For the first time in league history, the NFL will stage a standalone Thanksgiving Eve game, with the Los Angeles Rams hosting the Green Bay Packers at SoFi Stadium on November 25th. The matchup will stream exclusively on Netflix as part of the company’s rapidly expanding NFL partnership and is expected to become a permanent fixture on the calendar through at least 2029.
The Wednesday night clash also represents a significant scheduling shift for the NFL. League executives previously acknowledged that any teams involved would likely require a Week 11 bye because of the unprecedented Sunday-to-Wednesday turnaround.
Thanksgiving Day itself will again feature the traditional Detroit-Dallas doubleheader format before a primetime finale. The Lions will open the holiday against NFC North rivals Chicago at Ford Field, continuing Detroit’s long-standing Thanksgiving tradition dating back to 1934. The divisional match-up adds another chapter to what has quietly become one of the NFL’s more frequent holiday rivalries, with the teams having already met on Thanksgiving in 2024.
The late-afternoon showcase then shifts to Arlington, where the Dallas Cowboys will host NFC East rivals Philadelphia at AT&T Stadium. Despite both franchises’ long histories, it will mark only the third Thanksgiving meeting between the clubs, with Philadelphia having won the previous two encounters in 1989 and 2014.
Perhaps the most intriguing match-up of the day arrives in primetime, where the Buffalo Bills will host the Kansas City Chiefs in a heavyweight AFC showdown featuring quarterbacks Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. The game is expected to serve as one of the defining regular season match-ups of the year and will take place under the lights at Buffalo’s new Highmark Stadium.
The NFL’s holiday stretch will then continue into Black Friday, where the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly set to host the Denver Broncos in Amazon Prime Video’s standalone afternoon slot. The Black Friday game was introduced in 2023 as part of Amazon’s Thursday Night Football package and has quickly become another valuable standalone television window for the league.
Taken together, the schedule underlines how aggressively the NFL is reshaping the holiday calendar around premium broadcast inventory. What was once a three-game Thanksgiving tradition has effectively evolved, when the weekend slate is taken into account, into a five-day football showcase spanning streaming platforms and network television.
