The Seattle Seahawks have signed general manager John Schneider to a contract extension through to the end of the 2031 NFL season.

Schneider, who also wears the title of president of football operations, was hired in January of 2010, and enters his 16th season with the franchise this year. In that time, the Seahawks have compiled the sixth-best record in the NFL at 147-96-1, and are one of seven teams to win at least 140 games over that span. The club posted 10-plus wins in five consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history between 2012-16, and in nine of the last 13 seasons, leading to five NFC West Division titles and the franchise’s first Super Bowl title in 2013.

“The extension of general manager John Schneider’s contract is a testament to his 15-plus years of football leadership and success,” Jody Allen, chair of the Seattle Seahawks, commented. “I am confident that John will continue to deliver real results and a continued strong partnership with head coach Mike Macdonald that is already contributing to our winning culture on and off the field.”

Schneider’s rosters have included 15 First-Team AP All-Pro selections since 2012 and, after the team went without a Pro Bowler on the roster between 2009-10, he has seen 32 different players selected from in the seasons since.

Since partnering with Pete Carroll in 2010, Schneider has helped lead the Seahawks to heights previously unreached, with the team reaching the postseason 10 times in the past 15 seasons. He also oversaw several big transitions in that time, including the decision to trade Russell Wilson in 2022, leading to a draft haul that helped the Seahawks infuse the roster with young talent. Despite his relationship with Carroll, Schneider also oversaw last year’s transition at head coach, with Macdonald taking over after their memorable 14-year run.

I’m an NFL historian, and I’ve been blessed to have amazing mentors, so to possibly be here for two decades would be unbelievable,” Schneider told the press after signing the extension. “Obviously I’m very thankful, and owe a ton of gratitude to Jody, (vice chair) Bert (Kolde), (president) Chuck (Arnold) — and everybody on the third floor, everybody in our building, second floor, everybody we love in the cafeteria, all the scouts, sports science, football operations, all the current players and all the great former players that have been through here that we totally appreciated.

Now it’s time to be able to move forward with Mike and go win some championships.”

Head coach Mike Macdonald is signed through the 2029 season.
