TISCH TO RELINQUISH GIANTS OWNERSHIP

The new NFL League year has seen plenty of activity, with free agents signing with new teams and a few staying put on richer contracts, but one of the biggest moves appears to be happening off the field, with ownership of the New York Giants set to change hands as the league begins to feel the effects of the worldwide Epstein Files scandal.

Giants co-owner and executive vice-president Steve Tisch — who has held that role with the team since 2005 — and his siblings, Jonathan and Laurie Tisch, have requested league approval to transfer their ownership of the team into trusts for their children, which would account for a 23.1 percent stake in the team.

According to an NFL memo first reported by ESPN and confirmed by multiple outlets, the siblings have proposed transferring ‘their entire remaining interests, totalling 23.1 percent of the Club, to the Trusts’, a move that would mean the three would ‘no longer own any interest in the Club’ if approved by the league’s finance committee.

While the Tisches would not hold an ownership stake, reports suggest that Steve Tisch would remain involved with the team in a day-to-day capacity, which opens the situation up to all manner of potential behind-the-scenes intrigue. The Tisch family has been part of the Giants’ ownership structure since 1991, when Steve’s father, Preston Robert Tisch, purchased a 50 percent share of the franchise alongside the Mara family, which continues to hold the controlling interest.

Emails sent between Tisch and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein formed part of an almost three-million-document-sized cache released by the U.S. Department of Justice in January, and seem to suggest a relationship between the two much larger than the ‘brief association’ Tisch claimed when they were first made public.

Tisch acknowledged the correspondence in a public statement, saying: “We had a brief association where we exchanged emails about adult women — and, in addition, discussed movies, philanthropy and investments.” He added: “I did not take [Epstein] up on any of his invitations and never went to his island. As we all know now, he was a terrible person and someone I deeply regret associating with.”

The files reportedly include hundreds of references to Tisch, with email exchanges dating back to 2013 in which Epstein introduced him to various women and discussed meeting arrangements.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, speaking during Super Bowl week, said that the league would ‘look at all the facts’ regarding the emails as part of its personal conduct review process. But beyond those comments, there have been no official communications from the league, leaving the future structure of one of the NFL’s most valuable franchises uncertain as the league enters a new season.
