TOMLIN STEPS DOWN AS STEELERS HEAD COACH

Craig Llewellyn NFL

Mike Tomlin’s 19-year run as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers came to a quiet and emotional close following his team’s lacklustre playoff defeat at the hands of the Houston Texans.

Tomlin, who told reporters post-game that he did not have the ‘big picture’ thought process to answer questions about his future then and there, announced his decision to step down following meetings with team leadership, ending one of the most stable and successful coaching tenures in modern NFL history.

After much thought and reflection, I have decided to step down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Tomlin said in a statement. “This organisation has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honour to lead this team.”

Steelers president Art Rooney II confirmed the decision, calling Tomlin’s impact on the franchise immeasurable.

Obviously, I am extremely grateful to Mike for all the hard work, dedication and success we have shared over the last 19 years,” Rooney said. “He guided the franchise to our sixth Super Bowl championship and made the playoffs 13 times during his tenure, including winning the AFC North eight times in his career. His track record of never having a losing season in 19 years will likely never be duplicated.”

Tomlin’s final game came in a 30-6 loss to the Texans in the final game of the AFC Wild Card round. The result, in a game that was close well into the second half, contrasted sharply with the Steelers’ gritty, turnover-forcing performance on defense. Pittsburgh generated three takeaways and allowed just two offensive touchdowns, but the offense struggled to capitalise against the NFL’s top-ranked defense.

I thought they ruled the day,” Tomlin said of the Texans. “They certainly had a reputation for that coming in, and they confirmed it with their performance.”

The Steelers were limited to 175 total yards and converted just two of 14 third downs, while Houston went 10-of-15. Although the Texans led by only one point entering the fourth quarter, they exploded for 23 in the final period, including two defensive touchdowns.

We didn’t do enough in possession-down ball to get things going, any sort of rhythm or real points and so forth,” Tomlin said. “As the game wore on, it became an attrition component of it.”

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whose own future will once again be called into question, echoed his head coach’s assessment.

They’ve got a good defense, but we had a lot of opportunities — a lot of opportunities,” he said. “And we didn’t make the most out of hardly any of them.”

Pittsburgh struck first on a 32-yard Chris Boswell field goal and forced an early turnover when rookie linebacker Jack Sawyer stripped C.J. Stroud on a flea-flicker attempt. It would prove to be one of the few bright moments for a team that had seemed nailed-on for a postseason berth but had to survive a divisional nail-biter with Baltimore in Week 18, and only progressed on the strength of a missed kick by the Ravens.

As he steps away, Tomlin expressed lasting gratitude toward the organisation and its fans.

While this chapter comes to a close, my respect and love for the Pittsburgh Steelers will never change,” he said. “I will always take great pride in having been a steward of this team.”

The Steelers now join almost a third of the NFL’s 32 teams in looking for a new coach, with a potential pool containing the former HCs of AFC North rivals Baltimore and Cleveland amongst others.
