TUA GETS FALCONS’ WEEK 1 CALL

Tua Tagovailoa will begin to rebuild his NFL career as the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback after being handed the job for Sunday’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Falcons confirmed their long-awaited decision on Monday, bringing an end to a competition between Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr that had remained unresolved throughout the summer. Tagovailoa becomes Atlanta’s sixth different Week 1 starter in as many seasons, but neither quarterback enjoyed an ideal preparation for the campaign. Tagovailoa entered training camp with a tight back that kept him out of the opening week of practice, while Penix spent most of the summer completing his recovery from the torn ACL suffered last November.

Although Penix received clearance to participate in 11-on-11 drills on 22nd August, the former first-round pick did not appear during the preseason. Tagovailoa consequently received the greater share of meaningful work and started two of Atlanta’s three exhibition games. His most encouraging performance came against former team Miami, when he completed seven of eight passes for 95 yards and led the Falcons on an eight-play, 60-yard touchdown drive. Two fumbled snaps across his limited preseason appearances, allied to difficulty consistently attacking downfield, ensured that Tagovailoa never made the decision entirely straightforward.

Penix’s delayed return ultimately left the Falcons with a choice between the quarterback who had received the better preparation and the player who may yet represent their longer-term future. For the opening weekend, at least, new head coach Kevin Stefanski has opted for Tagovailoa’s experience. It gives the 28-year-old a chance that appeared unlikely when his six-season association with Miami ended in March. The Dolphins released Tagovailoa despite the four-year, $212.5m extension he had signed in 2024, accepting a record $99.2m dead-cap charge across the next two seasons. Atlanta subsequently signed him to a one-year contract worth approximately $1.3m, a modest commitment for a quarterback who led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards in 2023 and completed a league-best 72.9 percent of his attempts the following year.

Those achievements have increasingly been overshadowed by Tagovailoa’s injury history and declining effectiveness during his final season in Miami. He threw 15 interceptions in 2025, while recurring concussion concerns formed part of the wider debate over his future. The opportunity in Atlanta therefore comes without any long-term guarantee. Penix started nine games last season before suffering his knee injury and remains under contract as the quarterback the Falcons selected eighth overall in 2024. His return to full practice ensures that Tagovailoa’s opening performances will come with a degree of unwanted pressure.

The veteran will, however, begin the season surrounded by established playmakers in Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts. If he can provide the accuracy that defined his best football in Miami, the Falcons may have acquired more than basic insurance for Penix.
