Jared Verse understands that comparison is inevitable, but insists that he is ready to carve his own name into Cleveland football lore after being the counterweight in the biggest trade of the 2026 NFL offseason.

The player Verse was traded for is a future Hall of Famer, and the city Verse now calls home spent eight seasons watching him become the most dominant defensive player in franchise history. Naturally, the blockbuster deal that sent Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams will link the two pass rushers for years to come.

Verse’s message, however, was clear during his first appearance before the Cleveland media on Wednesday. He has no interest in being the next Myles Garrett.

“I’m not here to fill his shoes,” Verse insisted. “I’m here to bring my own. I’m here to work and be the best version of me. The best version of me is going to be the best defensive player in the league. The best defensive player in the league is going to play for the best defense in the league. That’s what I make myself a testament to.”

Those comments offered an insight into how Verse — who openly admits he was initially stunned when the Rams informed him he was part of the package heading to Cleveland — is approaching his immediate future. Having spent his first two NFL seasons in Los Angeles, where he quickly became a fan favourite and one of the cornerstones of Sean McVay’s defense, he says he accepts the reasons for his enforced move to Cleveland.

“It caught me by surprise,” Verse said. “I loved L.A. I loved the coaches, the organisation, my team-mates, everybody [who was] a part of it… the staff, the fans. I loved the whole vibe of L.A. and I was upset for a good little bit of time.

“But, when you’re an athlete, you understand the nature of the business. Everybody does what they think is best for their business and, you know, that’s the situation I’m in. I’m happy to be part of the Browns. I’m happy that they believed in me and were able to make that trade and bring me here. [I’m happy] to be with my team-mates, be with everybody here, and I truly do believe in everybody in the locker room. I was upset in that moment but, you got two choices: you can either work or you can give up… and I ain’t ever been a quitter.”

The Browns’ belief in Verse was evident throughout the negotiations. General manager Andrew Berry revealed earlier this week that the former first-round pick was a central component of the return package and that the deal would likely not have happened without him. Rather than accepting a collection of future draft selections, Cleveland insisted on acquiring a player it believes can become a foundational piece of the franchise’s next era.

“He’s obviously a huge part of this return for us,” Berry said. “Jared is an outstanding football player, former Defensive Rookie of the Year, two-time original ballot Pro Bowler. He’s a perfect DNA match for our attacking front. He’s really a terror in both phases as a run defender and a pass rusher. He allows us to continue to play defense as a high level, which has been our standard over the past several seasons.”

Since entering the league, Verse has recorded 143 quarterback pressures, tied for fifth-most in the NFL according to Next Gen Stats. He joins Garrett, T.J. Watt, Aidan Hutchinson and Brian Burns as one of only five players to register at least 40 quarterback hits and five forced fumbles over that span. His 2024 campaign yielded 76 pressures, 11 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and led to Defensive Rookie of the Year honours.

“When I was with the Rams, I still was learning how to play D-end,” Verse admitted. “I was still learning how to be a football player, an NFL player, and how to play at this next level. The Browns got me now and I feel like they’re going to get the best of me. They’re not going to get a half-finished project or something to work on. This is work here. This is going to be the best version of me. [With] everything I’ve done this offseason, it’s going to be great.”

That confidence appears to be shared inside Browns headquarters, with new head coach Todd Monken claiming that the acquisition is ‘going to fit us like a glove’.

“I only see his track ascending,” Monken continued. “I just see a world of upside by the way he’s wired. We’re jacked to have him.”
