VICTIM WILLING TO TESTIFY IN PEARCE BATTERY CASE
WNBA star Rickea Jackson is willing to testify against her former boyfriend, Atlanta Falcons linebacker James Pearce Jr, following his arrest for allegedly ramming her car as she tried to flee to a Florida police station.
Pearce, 23 and coming to the end of his rookie NFL season, was arrested on February 7th after a pursuit in Doral ended when he crashed his Lamborghini. He faces two separate criminal cases: firstly charged with fleeing or eluding police, aggravated battery and resisting officers, and then on two counts of aggravated battery and aggravated stalking.
According to police affidavits, Jackson called police just before 9.30am, stating that Pearce had followed her to her apartment complex. The two had been in a relationship for three years, but Jackson had recently ended it.
As the basketball star drove toward the Doral Police Department, Pearce allegedly rear-ended her vehicle and later rammed it head-on after cutting her off near the station. Officers said Pearce also struck an officer on the knee while attempting to flee, leading to a chase that ended in a crash. He allegedly resisted arrest before being detained.
Pearce was released Sunday on a $20,500 bond and ordered to stay away from Jackson.
The Falcons, meanwhile, have been largely quiet on the matter, saying that they are gathering more information and will not comment further. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, however, called the situation ‘obviously disappointing’ before emphasising that it was ‘still so early’ to make any proper judgement.
“We’re still not there yet, either way,” he said, echoing that the staff had ‘nothing to add’ and deferring to the team’s previous statement.
According to The Associated Press, Pearce’s attorney said that the player ‘maintains his innocence and urges the public to understand that, while allegations have the power to shape a narrative, that it is hardly the full, complete story’.
An initial hearing date has not yet been set.
