VIKINGS SIGN DC FLORES TO CONTRACT EXTENSION

Craig Llewellyn NFL

The Minnesota Vikings moved to secure continuity on one of the NFL’s top defenses, announcing a contract extension for defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

While the Vikings hope that they have finally tied their man down after repeated attempts to get his commitment on paper, the deal seems a curious move for Flores, who is still regarded as a leading candidate for head coaching vacancies with the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. The former Miami Dolphins head coach is regarded as one of the league’s top defensive coordinators, and has already interviewed for the Washington Commanders’ DC opening, although it is now understood that he is no longer looking for a lateral move. Remaining in Minnesota is apparently contingent on him not landing a head coaching job in the current cycle.

Flores has overseen a dramatic turnaround in Minnesota over the past three seasons. From 2023–25, the Vikings limited opponents to 19.2 points per game, the second-fewest in the league, while allowing 317.1 yards per game and just 5.1 yards per play. Minnesota also ranked among the NFL’s most disruptive defenses, totalling 52 forced fumbles and 73 takeaways during that span, while allowing the fewest plays of 20 or more yards league-wide since Flores took over.

Brian has a unique ability to connect with players, understand their skill sets, and put them in positions to maximise their impact on the field,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said in a team statement. “The identity of our defense is a reflection of his leadership and preparation.”

The progress has been measurable year over year. After finishing 31st in total defense in 2022, Minnesota climbed to 16th in each of Flores’ first two seasons before surging to third in 2025, allowing just 282.6 yards per game. Only Houston and Denver surrendered fewer yards this past season. The Vikings were particularly strong against the pass, giving up 158.5 passing yards per game — second-best in the NFL — and posting their lowest mark in that category since 1989.

Minnesota also excelled situationally under Flores in 2025, ranking second in the league in red-zone defense by allowing touchdowns on just 42.9 percent of opponent trips inside the 20, and surrendering only 2.11 yards per play in the red zone.

Flores’ impact was felt even earlier, helping guide the Vikings to a 14–3 regular-season record and playoff berth in 2024. That unit led the NFL in interceptions, passes defensed, opponent fourth-down conversion percentage and interceptions per attempt, while tying for the league lead in total takeaways. Minnesota recorded a positive turnover in every regular-season game that year, a franchise first and the only team in the league to do so.

Individual accolades followed. Three Vikings defenders earned Pro Bowl selections in 2025, while one was named to the AP All-Pro Second Team. Flores himself was a finalist for the Associated Press Assistant Coach of the Year in 2024.

By extending Flores, Minnesota signals its commitment to a defensive foundation that has quickly become one of the league’s most consistent and impactful units, but still hopes that no rival comes calling with a head coaching offer.
