Jalon Walker will miss the 2026 season after the Atlanta Falcons confirmed that the second-year edge rusher tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Tuesday’s training camp practice.

Walker was injured late in a non-padded 11-on-11 period as Atlanta worked through a two-minute situation. He remained on the ground after the play and was treated by the Falcons’ medical staff while team-mates gathered around him. The 22-year-old was eventually taken from the field on a cart, with practice ending shortly afterwards. Subsequent tests confirmed the initial fear that Walker had suffered a torn ACL.

His absence removes one of the central figures from a defense attempting to build upon the substantial progress made by its pass rush last season. Walker recorded 36 tackles, 5.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery across 15 appearances as a rookie, starting nine games.

Atlanta selected the former Georgia linebacker with the 15th overall choice in the 2025 draft, then traded back into the opening round to take Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr just 11 selections later, forming a young partnership intended to resolve the franchise’s long-standing problems generating pressure. Walker’s production helped Atlanta record 57 sacks in 2025, the second-highest total in the NFL, after managing only 31 during the previous campaign. His versatility also allowed defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to use him both on the edge and away from the line of scrimmage.

Ulbrich planned to expand that role during Walker’s second season, having seen him become more comfortable as a pass rusher over the latter stages of his rookie year.

“The vision for him is so much clearer in Year 2,” Ulbrich said during the offseason. “He’s going to make huge strides this year in every way — from a pass-rush perspective, a pure end perspective — but then also we’re going to start to utilise his versatility off the ball.”

Those plans must now wait until Walker completes a lengthy rehabilitation. The timing of the injury leaves Atlanta to reconsider its edge rotation before the preseason has begun, with greater responsibility likely to fall upon Pearce and the remaining defensive front. Pearce’s own position contains uncertainty, however, as he was arrested in February on domestic violence charges and could face NFL discipline if the league determines that he breached its personal conduct policy. No suspension has been announced.

Veteran Azeez Ojulari offers another established option after joining the Falcons in free agency, while Bralen Trice is attempting to revive his career after injuries prevented him from playing during his first two NFL seasons. Atlanta must decide whether that group provides sufficient cover or whether to pursue another veteran before the regular season.

Walker had already overcome several minor injuries during his rookie year, including hamstring and groin problems, but emerged as an increasingly influential part of the defense. He was named NFL Rookie of the Week following a two-sack performance against the New England Patriots in November, but an ACL tear represents a far more serious interruption to that progress.
