The NFL has confirmed that its 2027 draft will take place in Washington, D.C. between April 29th and May 1st, with the three-day event centred on the National Mall in what promises to be one of the league’s most visually striking venues yet.

Hosted in partnership with the Washington Commanders and Events DC, the draft theatre will be constructed directly in front of the United States Capitol, while the free NFL Draft Experience fan festival will stretch along Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 7th Streets NW.

The announcement continues the NFL’s successful strategy of taking one of its marquee off-season events to major destination cities. Since inadvertently having to move away from its long-time home at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the draft has evolved into one of the league’s biggest public spectacles, regularly attracting hundreds of thousands of fans over three days.

That popularity reached another level earlier this year when Pittsburgh welcomed more than 805,000 attendees across the three-day weekend, setting a new all-time attendance record, surpassing the previous mark established in Detroit in 2024. League officials now believe Washington’s expansive footprint could challenge the one-million attendance mark.

“The NFL Draft continues to grow as one of our biggest and most accessible events, and we are excited to welcome fans and prospects to Washington, D.C., in 2027,” said NFL executive vice president of club business, international and global events Peter O’Reilly. “Our nation’s capital will provide an incredible, iconically American stage to host fans from around the world, as we celebrate the next generation of NFL stars.”

Alongside the seven-round draft itself, the league will again stage a full programme of free activities, including community initiatives, the Draft Entertainment Series and the NFL Draft Experience. Fans will be able to take part in interactive exhibits, test football skills, view the Vince Lombardi Trophy, visit the Play 60 Zone, purchase exclusive merchandise and meet current players and NFL Legends.

For the Commanders, the event represents another significant milestone during a period of renewed optimism surrounding the franchise. Team president Mark Clouse described the draft as ‘a historic moment’ for the organisation, pointing to growing participation in youth flag football and the club’s planned return to the historic RFK Stadium site as evidence of football’s resurgence in the region.

Washington mayor Muriel Bowser also encouraged supporters to begin planning their trips, highlighting the city’s hotels, restaurants and springtime attractions ahead of what is expected to become one of the largest sporting events ever staged in the US capital.
