WILLIAMS CONFIRMED AS MADDEN COVER STAR
For decades, the Chicago Bears supplied some of the NFL’s most iconic figures without ever producing a Madden cover athlete. Walter Payton never appeared on the cover. Neither did Mike Ditka, Brian Urlacher, Devin Hester or any of the franchise’s other legendary names. But all that changed when EA Sports announced that quarterback Caleb Williams will be the featured player on the cover of the latest edition of the long-running video game series.
The selection caps a remarkable rise for Williams, whose second NFL season transformed both his standing around the league and expectations surrounding one of the NFL’s most storied franchises. The former USC standout earned the honour following a 2025 campaign in which he threw for 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns, setting a Chicago franchise record for passing yards while leading the Bears to their first NFC North title since 2018 and their first playoff victory since 2010.
EA Sports also highlighted Williams’ game-winning 46-yard touchdown pass in overtime against the Green Bay Packers, a play that was recognised as the NFL’s Moment of the Year and helped cement the QB’s emergence as one of the league’s marquee young stars.
“When I received the call from Madden, it was like my childhood dream was coming true,” Williams commented. “Being on the cover of Madden NFL 27 is a full circle moment, [as] I grew up playing Madden and imagining what it would be like to be part of the game. I know fans are going to love what’s new in this year’s game, and I’m looking forward to getting my rating up to a 99 by the end of the season.”
The choice of cover star also reflects the growing commercial influence exerted by Williams beyond his on-field production.
EA Sports’ standard edition cover depicts Williams executing his trademark jump pass, while the deluxe edition features the celebration that earned him the ‘Iceman’ nickname and references the distinctive nail art that has become part of his public image.
That combination of production, personality and visibility has made Williams one of the faces of a new generation of NFL quarterbacks, a group increasingly tasked with carrying the league’s marketing efforts as veterans such as Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford and Russell Wilson approach the closing stages of their careers.
For Chicago, meanwhile, the announcement represents another sign of how dramatically perceptions have shifted around a franchise long associated with dominant defenses, bruising running games and quarterback instability. The Bears have had Hall of Famers, Super Bowl champions and MVP candidates. Now they have Caleb Williams, Madden cover star.
While Williams will undoubtedly embrace the attention, however, Bears fans might not sit quite as comfortably. By accepting the honour, Williams also inherits the long-running mythology of the ‘Madden Curse’, the unofficial affliction blamed for injuries and misfortune that befell a succession of former cover athletes. Whether coincidence or superstition, Bears fans should be forgiven for hoping Williams breaks yet another franchise first by becoming Chicago’s first Madden cover star without becoming its latest victim.
Further details on Madden NFL 27 and its new gameplay features are scheduled to be revealed by EA Sports on June 4th.
