AFLE APPOINTS TOMSULA AS INAUGURAL PRESIDENT

The American Football League Europe has made its most significant off-field appointment since launching earlier this year, naming former San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula as the league’s first president.

The newly-created position will see one of the most respected figures in European American football work alongside commissioner Andreas Nommensen and the league’s franchise operators to oversee the AFLE’s continued development, with responsibility for raising coaching standards, enhancing player development, supporting franchise growth and improving both game operations and the fan experience.

For a league that has repeatedly stressed long-term sustainability and collaborative governance since its formation, the appointment represents another statement of intent. Tomsula’s coaching career spans almost three decades across both Europe and the NFL. He first arrived in NFL Europe in 1998, holding coaching roles with the England Monarchs, Scottish Claymores and Berlin Thunder before taking charge of Rhein Fire in 2006. His success in Europe ultimately opened the door to a 12-year stint with the San Francisco 49ers, culminating in his appointment as the franchise’s head coach for the 2015 NFL season.

His reputation on the continent, however, has arguably been cemented by his more recent work. Returning to Germany in 2022 to lead the modern incarnation of the Fire, Tomsula transformed the club into a dominant force that claimed back-to-back European League of Football championships in 2023 and 2024. The first of those title-winning campaigns included a perfect 12-0 regular season before Rhein completed an unbeaten championship run.

Although Tomsula stepped away from day-to-day coaching duties with Rhein last year because of family circumstances in the United States, his standing within the European game has remained undiminished. Now, rather than leading one franchise, he has been handed responsibility for helping shape the direction of an entire league.

“Jim Tomsula is exactly the kind of person the AFLE was built for,” commissioner Andreas Nommensen said. “He knows what it takes to win at the highest level, and he knows European American football inside out. If Jim didn’t believe in this project, he wouldn’t be here, and we are truly grateful that he will bring his knowledge and experience to the AFLE. With him on board, we are sending a clear message: we are serious about building something that lasts.”

AFLE chief executive Joel Nagel believes Tomsula’s combination of NFL experience and European expertise makes him uniquely qualified to help establish lasting foundations for the competition.

The appointment comes just over a month into the AFLE’s inaugural season, with the league seeking to establish itself as a long-term alternative within the evolving European football landscape.
