AFLE ROSTER RULES REVEALED
The nascent American Football League Europe has published its official roster regulations for the 2026 season, outlining a clear and structured framework designed to promote competitive balance, player development and long-term sustainability across the league.
The roster model establishes defined limits on team size while encouraging opportunities for domestic and international talent within a transparent and performance-driven system. Each team will operate under the following roster structure:
- The maximum roster size is set at 65 players.
- The active roster will consist of 53 players.
- On gameday, teams may register 48 players plus two ‘Homegrown’ players under the age of 21.
In addition, specific player categories have been introduced to ensure clarity and two seasons within the respective national tackle football system. Up to nine E-Players may be registered per team. These players are defined as athletes whose first organised tackle football experience took place outside of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan and the team’s designated ‘Homegrown’ region. This category includes all other countries worldwide and requires a minimum of two seasons within an organised tackle football structure.
A central pillar of the roster model is the Homegrown (HG) category. Homegrown players are defined as athletes whose first organised tackle football experience took place within their team’s assigned Homegrown country or region and who have completed at least two seasons of organised tackle football within that territory.
The Homegrown concept is designed to strengthen local football ecosystems, support player pathways and encourage long-term regional development. Through this roster structure, the AFLE aims to balance international talent with domestic player growth while ensuring fairness and competitive integrity across the league. According to the league office, the 2026 roster rules reflect its broader commitment to transparency, collaboration and responsible growth as it prepares for its inaugural season.
Further technical guidelines and compliance procedures will be communicated directly to participating teams ahead of the 2026 season.
