The American Football League Europe (AFLE) has taken another step in shaping an identity ahead of its debut season by confirming both the name and venue of its championship game, with the newly branded ‘AFLE Gold Bowl’ set for September 6th at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena.

Positioned as the centrepiece of the league’s first campaign, the Gold Bowl will serve as the culmination of a season that has unfolded against a backdrop of upheaval across the European game. AFLE’s leadership has acknowledged the turbulence of recent months, framing the final as both a milestone and a statement of intent as it looks to establish a foothold in an increasingly fragmented landscape.

The AFLE Gold Bowl is more than just a name,” CEO Moritz Heisler insisted. “It represents the moment every team, every player, and every fan is working towards. But above all, this game is about giving something back to the fans who make European football what it is. Their passion, loyalty, and energy deserve to be celebrated on the biggest stage.

Duisburg and the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena provide the perfect setting to do exactly that. With outstanding infrastructure, we have the opportunity to create not just a game, but a full experience, bringing our ‘Power Party’ to life and turning the event into a true football festival for everyone in attendance.

This is about more than competition. It’s about community, connection and delivering unforgettable moments to the fans who drive the sport forward. Nothing will stand in the way of making this a celebration they truly deserve.”

The Gold Bowl branding in itself is designed to anchor the league’s long-term identity, with AFLE positioning the game as the pinnacle of European American football. It’s a deliberate move in a market where rival competitions are still defining their future, and one that signals an ambition to create a recognisable, repeatable showpiece from year one.

Eight founding franchises will contest the inaugural AFLE season, scheduled to begin in May, with a geographically diverse field spanning much of the continent — even if details of the yet-to-be-finalised London franchise remain a mystery with just weeks to go before they are due to feature on opening weekend.

The choice of championship venue underlines AFLE’s event-first approach. With a capacity exceeding 31,000 and strong transport links across the Rhine-Ruhr region, Duisburg offers both scale and accessibility — key factors as the league looks to draw a pan-European audience for its showpiece weekend.

The Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena provides the perfect setting for an international final of this scale and, by hosting the Gold Bowl, we are sending a strong signal as a versatile and attractive sports and event venue,” Christopher Mainka, CEO of Duisburger Stadionmanagement GmbH, noted.

AFLE plans to extend the final weekend of the season beyond a single game, with a wider event beginning on September 5th centred around its ‘Power Party’ concept and featuring a broader festival experience.
