BIERBAUMER RETURNS TO VIKINGS
The Vienna Vikings have received a major boost ahead of the 2026 AFLE season with the return of star tight end Florian Bierbaumer, who rejoins the Austrian powerhouse after a brief spell in the United States.
Bierbaumer, one of Europe’s premier playmakers, had exercised an opt-out clause in his contract earlier this year to pursue an opportunity with the Louisville Kings in the UFL. Following roster cuts, however, the 6ft 6in, 255-pound target is back in Vienna, where he is set to enter his fifth season with the club.
The Styrian native has been a cornerstone of the Vikings’ rise since 2022, earning multiple All-Star selections and representing Austria at international level, winning a European Championship title. His development has also drawn NFL attention, with appearances at the International Combine and the International Player Pathway Programme.
“I’m extremely motivated to play for the Vikings again,” Bierbaumer said. “The experiences in the USA were incredibly valuable, but my focus is now entirely on Vienna and our shared goal.”
His return creates one of the most formidable positional pairings in European football, with Bierbaumer lining up alongside former Arizona Cardinals tight end Bernhard Seikovits. The duo gives Vienna a level of depth and versatility few teams on the continent can match.
“Florian is not only an exceptional athlete, but also an important part of our team DNA,” long-time head coach Chris Calaycay noted. “His presence on and off the field immediately makes us better.”
For Vienna, Bierbaumer is not just a proven performer, but a fan favourite whose presence reinforces the Vikings’ championship ambitions heading into the 2026 campaign.
