Having announced earlier this week that he was finally hanging up his helmet, Rohat Dagdelen will now take responsibility for the sporting affairs of the two-time European champion Rhein Fire.

The 28-year-old former quarterback, who has been with Rhein since its inception, is now taking the next step in his football career. Working closely with new GM Christoph Lörcks, Dagdelen, as sporting director, will primarily be responsible for the team’s athletic direction and the strategic development of players and coaches, as well as roster planning and recruitment for the upcoming season. The announcement only makes official a role that the Fire lifer has been fulfilling for a while as, for weeks, his daily routine has already consisted of video analysis, phone calls, and personal meetings with potential players and coaches.

“I am honoured to be able to help shape the franchise’s athletic direction and strengthen what Rhein Fire stands for,” Dagdelen commented. “At the same time, we want to further develop the team and ensure Fire shines brightly in Europe again next year.”

Dagdelen stumbled into the coaching role somewhat by chance last season, but team management, players and fellow coaches quickly realised the potential he brings to the sidelines. As both quarterback and player-coach, the Düsseldorf native made an early impact on game plan development and play-calling. After the away win in Vienna, players praised his tactical expertise and clear, structured communication during preseason. Since suffering a serious knee injury in the home game against the Berlin Thunder, however, Dagdelen has officially been the team’s offensive coordinator.

“Success is only achieved together,” managing director Daniel Thywissen noted. “From a young, up-and-coming player to the position of sporting director… only sports can write stories like this.”
