‘DISCIPLINED’ VIKINGS CAPITALISE IN POLAND

The Vienna Vikings underlined their status as early favourites for the inaugural American Football League Europe title with a convincing 42-23 victory over fellow unbeaten side Panthers Wrocław.

The clash at Wrocław’s Olympic Stadium had been billed as one of the standout fixtures of the young AFLE campaign, with both teams arriving off impressive opening week victories. What followed was a physical and entertaining contest that remained competitive through the first half before the Vikings pulled away after the break.

Vienna made their intentions clear from the outset, forcing a turnover on just the second play of the game, but, despite the early setback, it was the Panthers who struck first through kicker Jakub Ciurkot, whose field goal gave the home side an early advantage.

The first half developed into an entertaining exchange, with both offenses producing big plays before the Panthers special teams added a safety on a blocked punt. However, Vienna’s efficiency on both sides of the ball gradually began to tell as head coach Chris Calaycay’s team established a nine-point half-time lead. The visitors maintained that momentum after the interval and, despite Panthers quarterback Jameson Wang continuing to create opportunities, Vienna repeatedly found answers to steadily increase their advantage as the game wore on.

Quarterback Ben Holmes and safety Benjamin Straight were among the key contributors for Vienna, with the Vikings’ defense consistently preventing the Panthers from mounting a sustained comeback. Straight ended the game with two forced fumbles amongst his personal haul as Vienna moved to 2-0.

“We knew a big challenge awaited us here in Wrocław,” Calaycay commented. “The Panthers are a strong team and demanded a lot from us. That makes this win all the more important for us. The team showed character and demonstrated their quality in the decisive moments.”

For Wrocław, the scoreline was disappointing but there were positives to take from a performance that suggested the Panthers remain genuine contenders.

Wide receiver Mike Harley Jr continued his outstanding start to the season with 11 receptions for 181 yards and two touchdowns, while Spanish rookie Juan Flores-Calderon also found the end zone. Linebacker Patryk Guk, however, admitted Vienna had been the superior side on the day.

“Vienna showed a very strong performance. They played very disciplined and powerful football in today’s game,” Guk said. “We also showed a strong performance, but we made more mistakes than our opponent, which cost us more points.”

Panthers head coach Dave Likins also pointed to discipline and execution as the key differences between the two teams, congratulating Vienna for their all-round performance while lamenting his side’s errors.

“We showed some really good things but, in the second half, we lacked consistency,” Likins reflected. “I look at it through the lens of my work, and I need to do a better job as a coach. Next time, our preparation will be different; we need to better respond to the advantages our opponents exploited today.”

Likins was particularly frustrated by penalties and missed opportunities in crucial situations.

“We can’t make so many mistakes and take so many penalties because, at this level, the opponent immediately turns them into points,” he said. “We had opportunities on offense and in special teams that we didn’t capitalise on, so we need to better prepare the players to be more disciplined and do their job properly.”

Despite the setback, Likins insisted the Panthers remain firmly in the hunt as attention turns to next week’s road trip to Paris Lights.

“I told the players we could beat this team,” he admitted. “However, to beat the Vienna Vikings, we have to play a near-perfect game, because they are simply that good. I’m optimistic about the rest of the season but, for now, we’re focused solely on the match in Paris.”

The result leaves Vienna top of the AFLE pile heading into a home meeting with Rhein Fire this weekend, while Wrocław will look to rebound quickly against Paris Lights as both teams continue their pursuit of a place in the postseason.
