ELF COMMISSIONER ESUME TO STEP DOWN
Patrick Esume has shocked the European League of Football community by announcing that he is to stand down as commissioner at the end of the 2025 season.
The German’s decision comes after five ‘intensive and formative’ years for the league he created with Zelkjo Karajica — who the 51-year-old has quoted as the reason for his departure, citing ‘irreconcilable differences regarding the leadership and financial structure of the ELF’, according to Sebastian Mühlenhof.
The official league statement, meanwhile, says that Esume’s decision has been taken ‘with a view to his future professional commitments as an entrepreneur and NFL expert’.
Esume founded the ELF, together with Karajica, in November 2020 and, since then, the former player and coach has served in a dual role as shareholder and commissioner. The league has grown from an initial eight teams from three countries to 16 teams from nine in 2025. However, the lopsided nature of results this season, allied to several teams visibly struggling off the field, has led to the emergence of the European Football Alliance, which now comprises nine of the 16 teams, calling for greater transparency and elevated competition.
An unattributed quote confirms that the members of the EFA share Esume’s concerns over Karajica’s role, insisting that ‘there can be a future for the ELF with us, but necessarily without the current league management, and especially without CEO Zeljko Karajica. The EFA’s allegations almost all concern the economic and financial sector, which is Karajica’s territory’.
Esume will make his final appearance as commissioner at the league’s fifth Championship Game, at VfB Stuttgart’s MHP Arena, on 7th September, and ELF management will approach the search for a successor with ‘necessary calm and due diligence’.
“The ELF would not exist without Patrick Esume,” Karajica said in the league’s statement. “He is a figurehead and has played a significant role in helping our league grow and become stronger in such a short time. He deserves our utmost thanks and respect for his tireless commitment, passion and belief in this vision. He will always remain a part of the ELF family.”
