EX-MERCENARIES HEAD COACH HITS BACK
While the Helvetic Mercenaries prepare to regroup under a new head coach for the remainder of the 2025 European League of Football campaign, outgoing HC Marcus Herford has made it clear that there was no ‘amicable’ in his exit.
The surprise postponement of the Mercenaries clash with the Nordic Storm was quickly followed by the announcement that Herford had been relieved of his duties, with the club officially citing their poor start to the 2025 season as reason for the decision — something subsequent Instagram posts from the American suggest might not be the case.
“Trust me when l say, the TRUTH always prevails!” an initial reactive post, now seemingly deleted, read. “Please don”t get caught guessing but more active researching the Facts! For those wondering, I am doing justttt fine. Why, because when you do things the right way, there is no space for panic or worry! My players & coaches already know the REAL deal. Love all of you and proud to have been your coach!!! Guess it”s time for me to literally Turn The Page!!!”
That outpouring was followed a day later by something longer and mildly more reflective, in which the former Kansas Jayhawks QB and Milano Seamen/Berlin Thunder OC appeared thankful for the opportunity to coach in the ELF this season, but clearly still not happy with the way he felt he had been treated.
“I had to take a day to reflect on the past months before writing this,” the second post explained. “I want to start by thanking God for blessing me with the abilities to coach this beautiful game of football. Not only coach the game of football, but be able to do it in such an amazing country like Switzerland!
“When I accepted the position of Head Coach, my excitement for the opportunity quickly turned into ‘be carefuls’ from several people. Me being me, I am a firm believer in letting people show their true colors. Well, all I can say, without going to hard, is EVERYONE of you that said what you said was ABSOLUTELY correct!
“Do I regret accepting the position of Head coach, absolutely not. Actually, I am thankful I did because I got a chance to meet a group of young men that saw the vision I saw, that embodied what it means to push past, that trusted me from the very first whistle to the last whistle I was blessed to blow. I got a chance to hire a staff of men that was fully committed to the opportunity to build something special. I got a chance to meet a relentless group of physios, medical team, photographers, videographers, helpers & sports director.
“So, in my short time, I was blessed to impact a group of people in a way that goes beyond the field and, for that, I can leave with a smile on my face and my head held high! My Why was on full display from the very first day! If people knew all the things I had to endure thru this process, you would wonder why the heck I kept pushing. Well the answer is simple, because every one I mentioned above deserved that and more! You all made every text, call, argument, fight and tears worth it! Love you all and I hate you guys didn’t get the chance to see what the other side of the tunnel was looking like. I can just say it would have been sweet, it would have been rewarding, it would have been something to remember, but I guess for now we will have to leave it as a mystery.”
Clearly, there was clearly something more than disappointing results at play in the Mercenaries decision to axe Herford…
