FLIGHT OF FANCY? VULTURES WING CLAIM TO JOIN 2027 ELF
The European Football Alliance (EFA) appears to have added a third team to its 2027 expansion plans, according to the social media feeds of Mallorca Voltors. But is everything quite as it seems?
The Spanish team shook the post-Christmas malaise with the announcement that they are to join London and Milan in preparing to join the original European pro competition in two years’ time, using 2026 to ramp up its current operation in the Spanish national league. However, the timing of the claim — and the reaction of Gridiron’s ELF contacts — suggested that it was very much a one-sided vision.
December 28th turns out to be the Spanish equivalent of April Fool’s Day, and the Voltors look certain to have cashed in on the Day of the Holy Innocents — and likely the general lack of awareness surrounding what is a localised tradition — to pull the wool over the eyes of the unwary. The day apparently has somewhat darker origins in the Bible passage (Matthew 2:16-18) that tells of Herod hearing of the birth of Jesus and, fearing for his power, ordering all infant boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity to be slain. Fortunately, the modern version is confined to pranks and practical jokes.
