LONDON WARRIORS TAKE UP ARMS FOR AFLE

The public launch of the London Warriors as the American Football League Europe’s eighth and final franchise may only have arrived now, weeks after the English capital’s involvement was first announced by the organisation, but much of the work to bring one of Britain’s most decorated programmes into the continental landscape has been going on behind the scenes for months.

The AFLE confirmed officially that the Warriors nickname will complete the league’s inaugural eight-team line-up for the 2026 season, with the Croydon-based operation having quietly spent the winter building its structure, coaching set-up and roster behind closed doors ahead of the competition’s official kickoff later this month.

While the public announcement is new, the work behind it is not,” the league stated in its official announcement, revealing that the team’s preparations — including ‘roster construction, coaching structures and operational planning’ —have been underway since November. Despite the extremely limited time between the reveal and the Warriors’ opening game, the AFLE insists that the London franchise will enter the season as ‘a fully prepared and competitive team’.

The move brings one of the UK game’s most recognisable brands into the European professional conversation. Founded initially as a junior programme in 2005, the Warriors’ senior side was created two years later to provide a pathway for players graduating from the youth section. Success followed quickly with a national Division 2 title coming in their first senior season, the Division 1 crown a year later and multiple British championships in the 16 campaigns since as, between 2011 and 2025, the Warriors reached the BritBowl 12 times and collected seven winner’s trophies.

Their influence has extended well beyond domestic silverware too, having produced countless Great Britain internationals, players who moved into Europe’s top leagues, NFL Academy prospects and International Player Pathway selections. Five former Warriors players have earned Division I scholarships in the United States, while three progressed all the way to the NFL, including defensive end Efe Obada and former tight end Seydou Traore, who was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the 2026 NFL Draft just last month.

Former Warriors coach Aden Durde has also risen through the professional ranks and recently became the first British coordinator to win a Super Bowl as defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks.

Few figures are more closely tied to the Warriors’ modern identity, however, than general manager Marvin Allen, who played wide receiver for the club between 2008 and 2011 before later joining the coaching staff. Now tasked with overseeing the Warriors’ transition into AFLE, Allen said the scale of the project has already demanded extensive work away from public view.

The London Warriors name carries real weight, as this programme has won championships, developed players who made it to the NFL, and built a fan base that has been loyal for years,” Allen noted. “We have put in a huge amount of work over the past months to make sure we are ready to compete at this level, and I am incredibly proud of everything the team has already accomplished behind the scenes.

I would also like to personally thank, on behalf of the Club, our various legal advisers who have helped us reach this point – particularly Simmons & Simmons, The Media Lawyer and Bates Wells, for their expert guidance and relentless support in helping to make this a reality. Now we get to share it with the world. I cannot wait to see the fans in the stands and show them what this team is truly capable of.”

London’s addition finalises the AFLE’s inaugural membership ahead of the race to September’s AFLE Gold Bowl in Duisburg. The Warriors will compete alongside established European names such as Rhein Fire, Berlin Thunder, Vienna Vikings and Wroclaw Panthers, as well as fellow newcomers Alpine Rams, Paris Lights and Firenze Red Lions.

The championship game is scheduled for September 6 at Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena, but the Warriors’ campaign kicks off as they host Wroclaw on Sunday 24th May.
