LSU TIGER NEWSOME JOINS PANTHERS STAFF
Panthers Wroclaw have strengthened their coaching staff ahead of the 2026 AFLE season with the appointment of former Louisiana State University defensive lineman Seth Newsome as defensive line coach.
Newsome arrives in WrocLaw with a background shaped at one of college football’s most prestigious programmes, having played for the LSU Tigers in the powerhouse SEC conference, where he faced some of the top talent in the United States. That pedigree is further enhanced by the coaching influences that shaped his own development. During his time in Baton Rouge, Newsome worked under some of the sport’s most respected defensive minds, including former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron and defensive strategist Dave Aranda, while also learning directly from legendary defensive line coach Pete Jenkins.
“I learned so much from Coaches Orgeron and Aranda that it’s hard to narrow it down to just one aspect,” Newsome said, reflecting on the lessons he carries from LSU to Europe. “Honestly, I’m still learning from them.
“They are outstanding coaches, and their careers speak for themselves. Coach ‘O’ showed me the importance of relationships with players, as t helps build trust. He also taught me how important it is for a head coach to delegate responsibilities; I watched him do it incredibly effectively.
“Coach Aranda, in turn, taught me how to properly utilise the skills of the players you have in your organisation and on the defense.”
That emphasis on player relationships and role-specific deployment appears central to the philosophy he now brings to the Panthers. Newsome explained that mental toughness will be the defining characteristic of his defensive line unit.
“Above all, I prioritise mental toughness as the top intangible when evaluating, recruiting, and training players,” he said. “Being mentally tough allows you to accept the coach’s feedback, embrace discomfort and push yourself to be your best self. Playing defensive line is not for the faint of heart; it’s reserved for the toughest players.”
Alongside mentality, technique and conditioning will form the backbone of his approach. Drawing on his own experience in the trenches, Newsome described defensive line play as ‘the most gruelling position on the field’, adding that the ability to maintain technique under fatigue is non-negotiable.
“It helps me immensely,” he said of his playing background. “I understand how difficult playing defensive line is. It’s the most physically demanding [role]. I know how exhausting it can be, and that’s where maintaining technique and playing hard is crucial.”
In terms of player traits, Newsome said he places particular value on explosiveness and quick reactions, looking for ‘athleticism, agility, speed, and explosiveness’ and, in his own words, ‘cat-like reflexes’.
His decision to join Panthers Wrocław was driven in large part by the faith shown in him by head coach Dave Likins.
“I was motivated by Coach Likins’ belief in my abilities and what I could bring to the team in terms of coaching the defensive line,” Newsome said. “My main goal, beyond Coach Likins’ guidance, will be to train the defensive line to be as prepared as possible in terms of fundamentals before our first game. We should never abandon the fundamentals.”
